I thought this was going to be about the guy who used to coach at UH, and had to add some interesting things to the game films in order to motivate his players...
I remember watching Myth busters and they were trying to prove this same thing and it did explode but nothing too crazy. Just a puff of fire which of course if someone is in there will catch on fire. Pretty cool to see it happen in real life.
Methane & other "natural gases" from decomposing organic waste, etc. Alkanes do one thing: they burn. And even if it wasn't going to explode in a giant fireball, why would you light up in there? How long do you plan to be sitting there anyway? Do you just enjoy the aroma and the scenery?
Maybe he was trying to light a match to get rid of the stench like some people do lol....either way..wasn't the smartest person int he world.
