I graduated with a psychology degree (meaning it's worthless) and will be going to grad school for industrial-organizational psych in the fall. Until then, I'd like some money. However, the search for an above minimum wage 9-5 (read: not McDonald's) isn't working out because I'm under-qualified for...pretty much anything I look at on Monster, CareerBuilder, or Jobing. I do have experience as a waiter and I'm willing to do that, I guess since I'd get cash everyday and the hours are flexible, but even so, restaurants aren't calling back.

Any ideas what I can do? I live in the Greenspoint area if that matters.

Sorry, I don't have info.. but I am interested in what you plan on doing with your I/O psych degree. I'm wondering if I should go back to school for a Psych grad degree (not sure what kind)..

Actually in regards to your search, have you tried temp agencies yet? They seem to have clerical stuff that pays over minimum wage...though I'm not sure how the market is for that right now..

I/O psych can be applied to a lot of things. It's good if you wanna do some psychology in the workplace and not do clinical. I think I'll end up in HR stuff or consulting.

I need to find a job too. Preferably a job where I can constantly look at pretty girls all day. Oh, minimal work if possible. You see, I have this medical condition. If I get mad, I'll turn green and start to destroy things. Puppies, humans, cyborgs, monkeys, you name it, I'll destroy it.

There are jobs out there that have nothing to do with your field of study that you would be qualified for simply because they want somebody with a college degree....ANY college degree. Just look around.

Man, there's so many of those "marketing" companies having vague descriptions where it obviously leads to selling knives house to house. Avoiding those like the plague.

I know winter is when restaurants are desperate for employees. When winter break ends and classes start, they'll be killing for people who can work, especially the lunch shift. I'd check out any Pappadeaux's or Pappas Seafood Houses around you. I bet you could make some serious bank at the Pappadeaux's in the Woodlands. I worked at the restaurant on Kirby/Richmond my first year out of college and made almost $50k (worked my ass off to do it). You could sock away a lot of cash, especially with the better clientele in the Woodlands.

Thanks. Today I saw a Pappa's Cantina 1960 advertising that they were interviewing on the spot during the week, so I may give that brand a shot on Monday.

Oh man, did you get sucked into one of those?

Happened to me back in 2004, only to be selling coupon books door to door for the day. After my day of training, I never called back.

I'd rather shoot myself than do that.

    Good Luck astro101.

When I was in college (a zillion years ago when dinosaurs roamed the earth), I got called for an "interview."

Turns out, it was a room full of people for a presentation on these knives. Then came the pressure to sell them. Talks of how much money I could make. The guy argued with me until I stood up and yelled "I don't want to sell your $%@# %$#* KNIVES!!!!!"

    That ended abruptly.

You could be that guy who sits at the sink at clubs and has like a whole lot of cologne and gum and hopes for a dollar for a shot of spray.

BTW- I will hate you, as I for some reason feel guilty when I wash my hands and totally ignore you.

That might be a good option. The one downside about working at one of the Pappas's Mexican concept stores as opposed to the seafood stores is that you're likely to get a higher average price per plate at a seafood restaurant (and hence more tips). The counterbalance is that, from what I've seen in the few times I've eaten at Pappasito's, it doesn't attract as much undesirable clientele as the seafood stores tend to. So maybe you'll get a higher % rate on your tips to offset the price per plate (plus you won't get run all over the floor and b****ed at so things will get comped).

Man, if I was still dating my ex who worked in their corporate office I could find out what the average tips claimed at each of the concepts was. All I remember right now is that the bartenders at the 'deaux at Bush Airport made money hand over fist (but it's not something you can waltz into).

The one thing I do remember is that it shouldn't be too hard to stand out in the interviews. 95% of the people that interview are absolute chumps. Just show up wearing a polo shirt and looking half respectable and you should be solid. I remember my answer when the GM asked me why I wanted to work there was: "Well, Bill Simmons says that if you want to be a good writer, you should wait tables for a year so you can really learn about people. He's my favorite sports writer so I'm taking his advice." That should play pretty well.

Enterprise seems to be a place where younger folks can gain some experience -- I have no idea what it would be like to work for them though.

Yea, I'll definitely think about the options. I was thinking that maybe people wouldn't be willing to spend more at a seafood place when everyone's talking about money problems. At this location there's a Seafood and Cantina almost literally right next to each other, so I'll maybe just flip a coin.

Find a call-center job. Yes, it's mind-numbingly boring, and you'll feel your immortal soul slipping away, but the money's not too bad. And you'll get the satisfaction of quitting someday! :D

Even without this economy, you're going to have to bend over and work 6-12 months on a job that might not be on par with your degree or expectations. Unless you are lucky, extremely sociable, or know someone, it is what it is.

The sooner you join, the more experience you'll get, and the better you know what you want.

Now's the time to get on a summer crew and see the West. Plus, college kids make enough during a good year (bad year for fires) to not work during the Fall and Spring semesters. It is hard, dirty work though.

I can hook you up if interested and in reasonably good shape.
