    https://www.reuters.com/article/us-...avirus-emerged-from-chinese-lab-idUSKBN22F0SC

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Sunday there was “a significant amount of evidence” that the new coronavirus emerged from a Chinese laboratory, but did not dispute U.S. intelligence agencies’ conclusion that it was not man-made.

“There is a significant amount of evidence that this came from that laboratory in Wuhan,” Pompeo told ABC’s “This Week,” referring to the virus that emerged late last year in China and has killed about 240,000 people around the world, including more than 67,000 in the United States.

Pompeo then briefly contradicted a statement issued this week by the top U.S. spy agency that said the virus did not appear to be man-made or genetically modified. That statement undercut conspiracy theories promoted by anti-China activists and some supporters of President Donald Trump who suggest it was developed in a Chinese government biological weapons laboratory.

“The best experts so far seem to think it was man-made. I have no reason to disbelieve that at this point,” Pompeo said. When the interviewer pointed out that was not the conclusion of U.S. intelligence agencies, Pompeo backtracked, saying, “I’ve seen what the intelligence community has said. I have no reason to believe that they’ve got it wrong.”

The U.S. State Department did not immediately respond to a request for clarification on Pompeo’s comments.

Thursday’s report from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence said it concurred with “the wide scientific consensus” that the disease was not man-made.

U.S. officials familiar with intelligence reporting and analysis have said for weeks that they do not believe Chinese scientists developed the coronavirus in a government biological weapons lab from which it then escaped.

Rather, they have said they believe it was either introduced through human contact with animals at a meat market in the central city of Wuhan, or could have escaped from one of two Wuhan government laboratories believed to be conducting civilian research into possible biological hazards.

What a clown that guy is. Please show us this "significant evidence" that conflicts with all the readily available evidence in the genetic structure of the virus.

Spineless p***y Pompeo is likely following direct order from the idiot-in-chief to spout the bullshit of the day. He left his pride at the door...

Personally, I don’t really care if the virus came from a wet market, or a research lab. Either way, China screwed up and they need to do better.

But, now the virus is here and it’s up to us to deal with it. The way I look at it is China screwed up by allowing this to happen, and we screwed up with our very slow response.

I’m going to make a prediction. Trump is going to demand China pay the United States for all damages caused by the virus. He’s going to demand China pay us trillions of dollars in damages, and he’s going to make that a big part of his re-election campaign. Four years ago it was “we’re going to build a wall, and Mexico is going to pay for it”. This year it’s going to be “China unleashed a virus and they owe us 5 trillion dollars”.

Private US citizens will sue China in US courts. US will take away whatever immunity China would have in US courts. US will freeze China's reserve in USA.

Sounds stupid enough for him to do it.

If you call in Rush and Ingram enough to get their attention, I bet he'll do it.

I highly doubt that will happen. The PRC holds 16% of US debt, prior to this crisis. PRC interest invest quite a bit in the US. The one weapon that hasn't been used by the PRC but they have sent warning signs is what they could do in regards to capital. If the US were to freeze PRC's reserve in the US they will quit buying US debt or invest in the US.

To address the inevitable decoupling point. Yes steps can and are being taken to decouple. That will take years if not decades. Even many of the experts pushing decoupling acknowledge that it will be lengthy and won't be easy. Further the manufacturing that people are talking about moving are moving to countries like Vietnam where the PRC is also invested. Decoupling could be that manufacturing isn't done in the PRC itself but done in facilities where the PRC has a large stake, built by the PRC and in many cases managed by PRC citizens.

I'm also going to add I very highly doubt Trump will do anything that might actually cause his businesses to not be able to get financing from the PRC.

I will repeat it again. Even if you think the PRC is modern day Nazi Germany Trump isn't the guy you should count on to take a stand against them.
He'll say a bunch of stuff but he's caved over and over again to them.

This is all pretty obvious and sounds like they have had their talking points meeting finally.

The plan is us vs. them mentality with china. Its really all hes got if you think about it.

The anti china rhetoric is going to be fanned even more and we were "attacked by china" trump will even get to pat himself that the reason is because he fleeced them on trade deal so they were scared and brought in this virus. Plays well with his stupid ego. And oh yeah hes president he has " info he can't tell you" and "lots of people say to me" and oh yeah.. biden is bought and paid for by chinese.

Biden wins in every which way so this is trump only chance.

Hopefully trump doesnt get too desperate and over play his hand and get even further into it with china. China is incompetent bumblers not malicious actors on this virus but trump and pompeo need to have an enemy and its election year.

Having this virus in election year is especially scary since trump might try to do something really dumb to *try* to unify.

The sick part here is their own agencies are saying one thing and guys like trump and pompeo are saying its wrong. This isnt the first or 3rd time they do that. And with that , as usual their credibility is shakey..
Im with @Newlin that who cares if it was lab or not china screwed up and trump slept through february.

On the politic of this... let's play the China is the enemy card.

China is the "enemy". Why did Trump trust them so much in Jan and Feb? Why did Trump not listen to his Intel and demand China to tell the truth? Why did Trump not insist on having his CDC team there on the ground? Why, instead, did Trump said China is awesome, so transparent.... China was the enemy and Trump trusted them and failed the American people. The American people are dying because he didn't do his job.

He will say that they were doing a trade deal so of course he was saying nice things.
He will say that intelligence was wrong on 9/11 and will say that they are wrong here because "he knows"
He will tell you he didnt trust them in january as soon as the trade deal was signed jan 15 he will be the first to tell you he shut it down from china end of january. Of course china or not he wont talk about taking february off or calling it a hoax at end of february.
All nothing to do with china at that point and oh yeah the virus came through to usa mainly through Europe channels according to stats thus far .

Trade deal - oh, hopefully he goes there. Trump kills American because he's too busy loving China to get his trade deal instead of demanding China to let the CDC in, to tell the truth.

yes, it's expected that his core supporters will stay with him... those 29%. 29% isn't going to win the election. Well, maybe some of those older voters finally wake up because... death is a hell of a thing to wager on.

Trump loves Putin, North Korea leader, and it is hard to image that he does not like Xi. Trump just uses China to fool his fellows, and those morons will follow him to blame Chinese together every day to pretend that Trump will make America great.
