Wouldn't he first have to declare for the draft.
Hopefully humanity will win out and he will go to college first.

So, we'd have to 'tank' for at least another year just for him to graduate high school.

Then, if he decides to play college ball (hopefully), and he plays at least two years, then our total 'tank' years goes up to three more?

    No thanks.

What about this Haywood on North Carolina? He is a quick jumper and dominates the boards. He is having a good tournament so far. I haven't seen him play much, except for the tournament, but I like what I see.

Alton Ford is a really nice player to watch. He can score and rebounds like a mad man. I think he averages like 23 points and gets around 15 rebounds a game. He is a 6'8 small forward but he wont jump to the nba. He is going to play for Clydes Coogers.

Alton Ford is weighing in at around 260, 270 lbs. He's going to be a center in college and a power forward in the pros.

Charles poignantly pointed (alliteration) out that he didn't have this 'time' that Rudy was willing to give Steve to find 'his way' (in reference to the 8 tos a game during the preseason and why he was harsh on the kid). In the same light I don't have a geological time scale of time to give my fan-dom-ness. The season lasts 9 months as it is.

People always demand time - time, time, time, blah, blah, blah. This isn't a diamond, just the best restaurant in town. There are 20,000 customers waiting outside for the perfect rissotto. If this team killed themselves they could win. I watch people do more with less every day of the week.

The decisions to make this team better occur every night, every game. By definition the team is a better team (the desired result) if they are winning. To tank is to not win... to become worse, to love is to suffer, to suffer is to love, true light from true light. Homina homina homina.

    in a word - never.

Alton Ford is more like 6' 9" 260lbs.McDonald's site lists Ford at 6' 10", but he's a touch under that. If you want to see him play, he'll be in the McDonalds All-American Game on March 29th. ESPN will be televising the game. Eddie Griffin and Gerald Wallace will also be in that game. Those two are considered the HS players most likely to declare for this years draft.

Ford is a mini-Shaq. He's really muscular, wears #34 and has great footwork. He can also step out and shoot the ball from the outside.
Hopefully, he'll stay at UH for at least 2 years. It's pretty tough for a post player to jump straight from HS.

I heard CNNSI follows a player all year because of high potential. This year it was NC's Haywood and apparently they have been ripping him for a horrible season. I haven't watched much Tar Heel ball this year, but he's looking real good in the tournament. Swiping everything off the boards. He might be worth the chance. Tar Heels have played real well in the NBA. That's not a coincidence.

In a purely hypothetical situation, of course you tank. To get a franchise player, it's worth it. The problem is, there are too many unknown variables. Many dominant college players never do well in the NBA... sometimes, the team with the most losses doesn't get the 1st pick.

If one was guaranteed the player of the next 10 years... sure. But that's impossible, so I'd reject the idea.

In their freshman years at LSU, Stanley Roberts was considered "the next Shaq". Who did he play in front of? Shaq.

Don't believe the hype; at least not yet.

Actually, Roberts played along side Shaq in their one year together.

I do think that Oettinger's Shaq comparision was more a description of Curry's style of play rather than his overall ability.

i love the cougs and all but i think if alton is that good going to the cougs could really hurt his nba status. i mean true he may put the cougs on the map but a player like that with high potential of going to the nba wont get any attention in houston adn could really screw up his career and chances of getting drafted real high. has he been offered allthe big name schools and turned them down or does he have low scores or some reason to be going to U of H besidesjust he likes housotn? and i know yall will say hakeem and clyde did fine but tthe cougs were a powerhouse back then and now they get no attention

    Mr. Fan,

I think Alton is making the right choice. There is a chance that the Coogs would have Cedric Taylor, Antonio Falu, with Ford and George Williams. That has the makings of a ranked team. Good recruiting begets good recruiting. I think now is as good a time as any to refresh UH's status in college basketball. Can you tell I am alum?

    Rocket Fan,

If Alton Ford turns out to be the real deal, then the NBA will know about him regardless of where he plays.

If you look at the players selected in the last two NBA lotteries, you'll find a #1 overall from Pacific, #6 from Miami of Ohio, #9 from a German Club team, #8 from St.Louis, #11 from Ball State and a #12 from Barton County Community College. Those schools can't really be considered powerhouses.

    B-Ball Freak,

It's looking very doubtfull for Cedric Taylor to qualify and Falu has said that he won't go to UH and that he's currently leaning toward TCU. Despite that UH has a stellar recruiting class in addition to Ford. They've got Okafor a JC PF, Lyman a JC shooting guard and a big time 6'7" high schooler out of the Ft. Worth area. Also, the PG from San Jac is suppose to commit next month.

Chris Booker is the guy out of the Fort Worth area. High School scouts are always comparing Ford with Karl Malone. It can work both ways that a Big time high school kid goes to a big time college program and never fulfills that promise. It's happen time and time again. Chris Burgess was a top 5 player coming out of high school and he was stuck at the end of Duke's bench. Lester Earl was a stud coming out of high school, now he's a role player at Kansas. It's not an exact science projecting how a player will turn out in different situations.

Did anyone see Neil Fingleton, listed at 7'6''? At that age, couldn't he still be growing? But he wasn't listed until #
4, which says to me: He's got no skill, and probably won't even be Shawn Bradley.

And, no, I wouldn't tank a season, to get an alleged superstar. He could very easily bust...
