Poll of residents puts Houston on list of least-safe U.S. cities
    By Craig Hlavaty, Houston Chronicle | May 13, 2013 | Updated: May 13, 2013 5:05pm

A recent Gallup poll names the Houston, Sugar Land, and Baytown region among the least safe U.S. metro areas, according to resident confidence in the safety of where they live.

Only 63 percent of those polled in the Houston area responded that they felt safe walking alone at night in the area they reside.

The poll measured the 50 largest metro areas in the U.S. for self-reported feelings of security.

Compare that to the 80 percent in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area who feel totally secure walking after dark. Texans might scoff that with frigid Minnesota temperatures, criminals would be stymied to commit violent acts in five layers of clothing. Houston must have crime-friendly weather, for the most part.

Only 55 percent of Memphis residents said they had high levels of personal security while walking in the "Barbecued Pork Capital of the World", where rock and roll was born.

On the upper end of safe cities, 78 percent of those polled in Denver responded that they were safe, and those living in Austin and Round Rock were 77 percent satisfied with the safety of their cities.

Jacksonville, Fla. (63%), Riverside, Calif. (61%), and New Orleans (59%) round out the least-safe metro areas in the poll.

I saw that on Yahoo a few days ago. Interesting, I guess.

You just gotta know what areas to avoid. There aren't any high-traffic areas of Houston that I feel unsafe in.

I wonder what the houston/sugar land split was. Fort Bend is among the richest counties in the country.

I agree with Riverside (and L.A. in general) and New Orleans being least safe...but after having lived in Houston and now living in the Vegas area, there is absolutely no way in the world Houston is less safe than Vegas...even perception-wise.

'feeling safe' has nothing to do with being safe.

Assuming a direct corelaton between the two is beyond stupid. Gallup should have.more sense than that.

Part of it may have to do with the fact that Houstonians don't walk anywhere. They may feel comfortable driving around at night because they're used to it. But they're not used to walking so they're less comfortable. Compare that to a place like New York where pretty much everybody walks and uses transportation at all hours of the night and it's natural that they feel safer because they're used to doing what the question actually asks.

    Bigot?

Most of that Katrina "crap" left long ago. It wasn't as easy to do "business" in Houston. The crime is in Houston is homegrown.

That was my reaction as well. Self-reporting won't give you any insight into how safe a city actually is. It probably says more about the culture and psychology of people than the actual environment. In fact, feeling unsafe might actually promote safe outcomes.

But, asking about how people feel is a legitimate survey question to ask. You just have to be careful how you interpret the result. If you wanted to open a downtown club and figure people will parallel park and walk to your establishment, this is a more relevant data point than actual safety, for example. The way the article wants to suggest it reflects actual safety though is completely wrong.

I'm having a hard time figuring out what areas of Sugar Land could even be deemed remotely unsafe to walk around at night. I guess it's that Whole Foods on Highway 6. Everybody knows as soon as a Whole Foods opens up, the neighborhood goes to s**t!

Does that mean I'm not more black than Shane Battier?

I can already feel my street cred rising.
