Hey yall. I would like to see who your favorite metal guitarist of all time is. My definition of metal is pretty broad and I consider stuff all the way back to like Zep and Rainbow to fit into that category. If you don't see your choice listed in the poll. Post your selection and I'll try to add it.

His body of work doesn't span for decades like some of the other choices, but no metal guitarist gave me goosebumps like Randy Rhoads.

He may not be considered metal, but Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine / Audioslave is one of the most amazing guitarist I've ever heard.

Since you put Jimmy Page in there, I had to vote for him.

    Slash gets honorable mention.

    Most glaring omission? Randy Rhodes.

Depends on what you want the guitarist to do:

Rhythm - James Hetfield - Modern metal is so indebted to his sound and technique that I simply can't imagine what it would sound like without his influence. Dave Mustaine runs a close second, simply because he was there when Hetfield developed his sound and was probably pretty influential.

Lead - Most metal guitarists rely on the same few tricks over and over again, so I find them less compelling. However, the first part Mustaine's solo break on "Holy Wars...The Punishment Due" Dr. Know's solo on "Right Brigade" and pretty much any solo (they're pretty much interchangeable in their atonality) by one of the guy's in Slayer are all pretty wicked. On the bluesier side, I like Angus Young and Jimmy Page (although the latter got really sloppy at times).

I chose Dave Mustaine for a number of reasons, but most importantly because he can rip with the best of them and sing lead at the same time.

BTW, I would also give an honorable mention to Adrian Smith from Iron Maiden.

Good call. I just came back into the thread to add that Buckethead should REALLY be in the list as well.

I don't know what's weirder about Buckethead: the bucket on his head, or the 'Michael Jordan Cologne' sticker on his guitar.

For now, I'm going with the bucket on his head.
