Europeans See U.S. as Threat to Global Stability

Some adults in five European nations express reservations about the role of the United States in world affairs, according to a poll by Harris Interactive published in the Financial Times. 30 per cent of respondents believe the U.S. is the greatest threat to global stability.

Iran is second on the list with 23 per cent, followed by China with 15 per cent, Iraq with 14 per cent, North Korea with eight per cent, and Russia with two per cent.

In Spain, 44 per cent of respondents place the U.S. as the main perceived threat. 36 per cent of respondents in Britain—and 28 per cent of respondents in France—feel the same way.

In Italy, Iran was the first country on the list with 31 per cent. The U.S. and Iran are tied with 24 per cent in Germany’s sample.

On Aug. 31, U.S. president George W. Bush discussed his foreign policy approach, saying, "America has committed its influence in the world to advancing freedom and democracy as the great alternatives to repression and radicalism. We will take the side of democratic leaders and reformers across the Middle East. We will support the voices of tolerance and moderation in the Muslim world."

After being branded as part of an "axis of evil" by Bush in January 2002, Iran has contended that its nuclear program aims to produce energy, not weapons.

    Bush singlehandedly made it happen.

He still tries to use 9-11 for his political gain. How disgusting!

I would put Israel somewhere on that list as well.

I think A lot of Europeans think Bush is to agressive, And they do not like the fact that he lied about different things. He also really showed he does not care what Europe thinks. Also the entire torture thing is something most europeans do not really appreciate.

So yes Bush created this opinion. Hopefully the next president makes different decisions. I think the trust in the US will be healed pretty easily if someone else but Bush is the president.

Also one of the reasons (I think) why the USA is on top of that list is because of the fact that they are such a strong military power. Most countries could be agressive but it wasn't importent for Peace around the world, only in their area. But the USA can be agressive all over the world, and not many armies could defeat them(if they choose to be agressive).

Luckily for the Dutch we are getting elections soon :D (since the current government was IMHO not a good government, they also used fear as a way of trying to get voters, they learned from Bush)

What a combination! Three countries permanently on UN security concil plus Iran, Iraq, and N Korea. Wow.

Interestingly, the closest allies of Bush administration, UK and Spain(at one time), gave the highest vote to US being the greatest threat.

And French got the whole ranking right!

Other than the US, not a single country on that list (or any list for that matter) is a threat to "world" security, except perhaps Russia, if they want all of us to glow green.

Ironic, I know a lot of Americans that feel the exact same way about Europe.
