Pretty simple...do you think the end of the world is near? If so, explain your definition of "near".

Personally - I believe the world will end within 20 years due to the many problems that are getting worse at exponential rates.

I think we've only got 5 billion years left, tops.

I would say that we are about 200 years away.

Nuclear weapons will be our downfall imo. Nukes are 1940s technology, its getting easier and easier for the common bad man to build them or purchase them, when you accelerate that by 200 years, it will be like the future man building a bow and arrow to us.

By the end of the world, you mean the end of humans, yes?

We couldn't blow up the planet if we wanted to... and I don't think we could extinguish all life either. I guess an asteroid could come out of no where and wipe us out, or maybe a giant solar fart could irradiate us all but I find those highly unlikely, near term.

If "the end of the world" means a drastic change in the way most people live their lives then sure, the end is near.

    ROFLMAO !!!

The earth is roughly 4.6 billion years old......and even if man kills itself off, the Earth will just shake us off like a bad habit and rebound with something else.

What a presumptious and arrogant question.

Not according to science....we have about 5.4 billion years more until the sun Novas...and the earth is consumed in it's expanse.

    NO...is the answer.

If we are talking about the end of man......then the answer is still the same from me.

Nothing has changed as far as war goes, we still fight, bicker, and kill each other, the only difference is that now, a single person can inflice much greater pain.

I believe the vast majority of people have the same goals to live peacefully and raise their kids into a world in which they can have a better life.

Right now, Greed, power and religion are the root causes of most of the conflicts....but I have faith in man....that we can work it out before we kill each other off.

So, my answer if we are talking about the "fear" aspect is still no.

And, by the way, people have been saying it is the end of the year for centuries.....and they were all wrong.....

This question gets to the heart of why there is an international space station.... and that reason is to one day send myself, and some impossibly hot astrochick into space only to watch a series of unfortunate events destroy mankind. And thus our duty to repopulate the world becomes clear.

    No, but everyone else does.

    Just google 'sustainability'
    or 'conservation'
    or 'overpopulation'
    or 'global warming'
    or 'nuclear weapons'
    or 'drinking water'
    or 'terrorism'
    or 'pandemic'
    or 'global recession'

I would say for the most part alot of what are hot button issues today deal with the end of 'the world' in some way.

There have always been over reactionary idiots that believe the world is coming to an end.

The difference now is that the internet gives them access to spread their lunacy at the speed of the information super highway.

Nothing has changed, except that information is more freely traded in modern times.

    Even bad information.

If the Rockets don't make it out of the first round this year, then YES.

    Well, for me at least...

I posted a thread like this a few months ago:
    http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=150548&highlight=doomed

I honestly don't know. I think we might be in for some rough times and there could be a severe shock to our civilization but barring asteroid, solar fart, sudden plague or gamma burst I don't think humanity is doomed but civilization as we know it could be.

Too bad the Mayan civilization ended LONG before their predicted end of time.

Nah, I have watched all that psuedo science enough.......

None of those civilizations mentioned the 4.6 billion years before they were around, and some of them mention a date as a time when the aliens return.

    So....I guess we shall see.

Why do people think that a culture that couldn't master the wheel could foresee the end of the world?

I get that they did well with a calender but if you're dragging heavy stones with a sled... how can you take that stuff seriously?
