If you count 2006 as a transition year, the Houston Rockets have had Daryl Morey as their GM for three offseasons now, and three regular seasons. How do you rate his performance as a GM? Has your opinion of Mr. Morey changed since he first took over? Are you happy with the course that he has placed the team on?
He's an excellent GM, can't really fault him for our injury-prone superstars. Last season was the Rockets' best season in recent memory as they made it out of the 1st round and took the Lakers to 7 games. Each season has been better than the last since morey took the helm. Many people are writing the rockets off this year, but this is a team that always does more with less thanks to morey's wise moves.
Should have traded Tracy last offseason to Detroit. I suspect Leslie though may have had a hand in quashing that.
He will achieve Messiah status when (and if) he lands a franchise caliber player or 2 late rounders of Manu/Parker caliber.
You know, Sam, people keep spouting this off, but just where do people keep getting the ides this trade was on the books? One random columnist with a possible rumor doesn't really cut it.
(05-06 season) PG: Alston/ Head SG: Wesley/D. Anderson SF: McGrady/Padgett/Baxter PF: J. Howard/Swift/Hayes C: Yao/Deke to (08-09 season) PG: Brooks/Lowry SG: McGrady/Wafer/Barry SF: Battier/Artest PF: Scola/Landry/Hayes C: Yao/Deke/Dorsey he is doing an amazing job so far
I like Morey, not so much MoneyBall, and right now the team seems on the wrong course. I don't fault him for that. I think L.A. is committed to the Yao/TMac duo, thinks they can win a championship and is stubbornly going to keep "building around" them. That hasn't worked and won't work in the future; they are simply too injury prone. That really concerns me. I am not sure Morey can turn that train.
The problem is that the other teams know they are injury prone, so it wil be really hard to let go of tmac and yao and get up to par replacments.... I really belive we are "a healthy tmac yao duo" close to the nba finals at least. anyway i agree, yao and tmac probably wont be heathly enough for us to see it happen
DM has done a great job revitalizing the roster. We are now more youthful, despite all of the injuries. He's created a great framework for the future. He's great at the small moves (Kyle Lowry, Carl Landry) and there's no telling what he can do when given his first opportunity to do some major damage in free agency. All I'm hoping for is one more scoring wingman or big before the start of the season. ***prays for Caron Butler***
This past two seasons in which Morey has been incharge.....have been two of the most exciting seasons of the past decade, and i think is due to the fact that Morey has an awesome ability to scout players(ex: Aaron Brooks, Carl Landry), and pull awesome trades(ex:Luis Scola, Ron Artest ) ....of course this is just my opinion 2007/2008 season 22 game winning streak(Missed Yao) 2008/2009 season 2nd round/ almost knocking out the eventual champs (missed McGrady, and partially missed Yao) PS- I like playing the role of the underdog, when no one give us a chance, ROCKETS 09/10!!!! -rocketblaze
I'm with you on this in addition to how many all stars has he drafted or traded for? If all he does is get a bunch of role players, that's not going to cut it.
His eye for talent and methodology for acquiring cheap, low risk players with upside speaks for itself. Unfortunately, that method rarely produces superstars so I agree with DD that transitioning from Yao/T-Mac to Yao/whatever is his first *major* task. We all know Yao isn't going anywhere so depending upon his condition (which we hope won't be an issue post-surgery), he has to figure out what to do with McGrady and/or how to replace him. Whether that means retaining him post-2010 or using him to acquire a second star -- something's gotta give there.
I really didn't like Morey at the beginning. I thought he handled the firing of JVG pretty poorly. It was a really bad situation for a new, young, first time GM to be in, and he seemed in way over his head. I heard him on the radio trying to explain the situation and I became fearful for the Rockets' future. However, I think since that first month or so on the job, he has settled in nicely. I like the way he evaluates talent and his ability to make trades to get players he wants. But he inherited a roster with two max contracts on it. I think what he is able to with the team as each of those contracts expire (re-sign, trade, use the money to sign FA's) is really going to be critical to a true evaluation of his job performance.
He's done a great job building a roster full of capable players around the centerpieces Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady (who he isn't responsible for). It really is a championship calibur team if you look at the full roster, he was just bitten by the injury bug to his two superstars, but the Rockets are much better equipped for such a thing because of Daryl Morey. Period. What are the Cavaliers without LeBron (and some other important guy)? What are the Celtics without Pierce and Garnett? What are the Magic without Howard and Lewis? What are the Lakers without Gasol and Bryant? I think the answer to all of these questions is simple: not a playoff team. What are the Rockets without Yao and McGrady? I can't definitively say they're not a playoff team. Hats off.
morey is the best gm in the nba hands down and its not even close i love the way hes handling the mcgrady situation hes not in any rush cuz he knows thats our expiring contract whats the rush plus mcgradys gonna have a chip on his shoulder and hes gonna play motivated basketball due to it being contract year for him if he doesnt have a good year it wont matter cuz he will be comin off the books and if he does have a good year u might be able to trade him at the deadline to a contender for some young talent or some draft picks but he wont be in a rockets uniform next year unless he plays superstar caliber basketball.
Some team is gonna implode mid season. Thats when we deal TMac for talent so they can tank and fill the seats.
