My two girls (2 and 4) have been home with me yesterday and today because we had a snow storm set in which was topped with a layer of ice that shut down all schools and daycare. This morning we were talking. My 4-year old started talking about her coming November birthday when she will turn 5. We counted up from there to her 10th birthday. We did the same little game with my 2 YO-- counting up to her 10th birthday, too. My 4 YO responded "Then we'll be able to do all the things that you and Mommy do, right?" I countered: "Yeah, like clean the house, cook the dinner, wash the clothes...." (I just kind of left it open-ended so they could tack on some more chores). Immediately, my 2 YO chimed up with "... and vote!"
Giddy, bravo to you. You are raising your children to respect their citizenship. Too many people in this country do not exercise the basic right of American citizenship...the right to vote. Sounds like your children will not fall under that category. Bravo!
Thanks, but I feel unworthy of your praise. I didn't do anything to inculcate this awareness. I'm way more than a sperm-donor but I've done nothing that I know of to elicit this kind of awareness. She may just be very bright. She's a precocious talker. A couple of weeks ago, she carried a little ceramic animal over to me, presented it to me and announced, "This is breakable!" Who knows... by he time she's 10 I might just be voting Democrat! ... or maybe I'll join andymoon's fledgling party.
That is too funny. I take my daughter to vote with me all the time. Durring the last presidential elelction they had a boot set up for kids where they punched a ballot (looked just like the real thing) for historical canidates. She voted for Jefferson over Washington, Betsy Ross over Susan B. Anthony. (Those are all I remember) I though it was very cool and a good idea to get them interested in the whole process.
