I have to share this story with someone. Every word is true. It happened about an hour and a half ago. It was 8:05 p.m.. Bedtime for my eight-year-old daughter. This would be an end to our evening of Texas Hold 'em. "Oh, daddy! Just one more hand!?!?!?" she pleaded. "Okay. We'll play this hand for a million bucks." Excited, she sits back down and I shuffle and deal. I've got this: She bets first: "Fifty thousand!" hmmm... okay, she's trying to take me out way too early. I call (lots of poker left to play). Here's the flop: ugh. I don't have much to work with. There's the possibility of a straight, but that's a long shot. With a flop like that, she's probably got nothing. So, my only chance is if I get a queen on the turn or the river and I've got a high pair. If that doesn't work, I can only hope my queen is higher than either of her cards. She bets again: "Two hundred thousand!" I think, "What?!?! That's crazy. The girl hasn't folded a hand all night. She just hasn't learned how to properly bet yet. Well, she's gonna get spanked this time. I call. Here's the turn: Wow! Look at that! I might have a chance at a straight! it's still a longshot to get a 5 on the river, though. Unless that happens i've got nothing. I can't let her know that, though. She bets again: "Two hundred thousand!" Ugh. She keeps betting high when she has nothing. I mean, looking at those cards, there's no way she has a pair higher than queens unless she got pocket kings or aces (which, I'll tell you right now, she didn't). "No," I think. "She's got nothing and she's bluffing high to get me to fold." I call. Then comes the river: WOW!!!! JACKPOT!!! I have my straight. It was a long shot, but I've got it! She bets again: "Five hundred thousand!" The kid just doesn't know when to quit. And there's no way she's gonna beat my straight. The kid is gonna have to learn not to drive up the pot so high when you have nothing. I know that soon she's gonna be crying because she lost the big hand, I call. Showdown. total pot: $900,000 I show my cards. I say, "I have a straight. 7-high with a queen kicker." She shows her first card: Even if she has a pair of queens, she doesn't beat my straight. She shows her second card: She says, "I have a straight, too. 8-high with queen kicker." I lost. She took every dime. I'm still in shock.
you were bustin my chops on another topic....... and your teaching your 8 year old how to gamble........ nice story kettle. signed, pot.
Absolutely!..... but not yet. Because I'm still learning, and because I'm broke, I don't think I'm ready to play for money yet. And when I start playing for money, I'd wanna start slow - playing for pennies or nickels and gradually moving up from there as I get better. I guess that's a good way to start.
Its nice that you are spending time with your daughter. But Poker?? Your kid, do as you please I guess.
Well, we were doing monopoly for a while, but the games were just lasting way too long - past her bedtime. I created a Word document the I printed out that kept track of board positions, property ownership, money.. everything. But since the games were lasting too long, we never ended up finishing. Why not poker?
quite a few internet parents... not like they were even playing real money. everyone does this as kids. at least they werent watching tv or some crap.
Playing cards like that you can both come play at my game anytime... Great story......thanks for sharing. DD
well, if it makes ya feel better, I don't remember it and I was probably just mouthing off again and not trying to attack you. And I hate it when I'm hypocritical (which I can be sometimes).
Poker is great for teaching Math, counting, money skills, concentration, and poise under pressure. Good on you for teaching you kids!
Give me a break. There's nothing wrong with playing "play" poker with your kid. Tough loss drox Sounds like you guys had fun!
The daughter betting was hilarious, good story. And I see nothing wrong with teaching your kids poker and gambling (as long as it isn't too serious). Hell, I wish my dad played with me when I was younger.
I'm on a string of bad games since I went to LA a few weeks back. Before that I was good to win 1-3 or 1-4 times. I'm 0 fer my last 6 now
Really, that was the most I've ever had at poker. It was so cool that she showed me up like that! We don't play with real money. When you learn about poker, you quickly learn that it's not about gambling, it's a small amount of luck, a large amount about strategy.... ...but the really huge lessons that poker teaches are reading other people, manipulating them to do what you want, and learning how not to be manipulated by them. I very much want my kids to learn that.
so... I've been thinking about this, and I have a question... There is some luck involved in poker. If you're dealt bad-hand after bad-hand after bad-hand.....I guess you might be able to successfully bluff a few times, but that can't last long, can it? And it's really dangerous to drive the pot up high when you're holding nothing... and you certainly wouldn't want to do that several times (if you give getting bad-hands)... ... so what do the poker champs do when they run into a long string of really bad hands?
