this is in light of the "tilt" thread. lots of poker discussion. i started playing for fun about 5 years ago and started playing in casino's the day i was allowed in (18 in alberta where i go to college, 19 in british columbia where i'm from). it seems that more and more AND MORE people are getting into this. i mean, yesterday i played at a local casino with a full table - 3 of which were newbies. i love it - easy money.

so, do you play? or no. and are you a long time player. or recent (last 3 years i'd say is when it has really started catching on).

btw...hold 'em is my game as of 3 years, though i started out player everything but.

    what game do you play?

I enjoy playing with friends and co-workers, but that's about it. I don't play when I go to Vegas. My favorite games are the non-traditional ones like balls, screw your neighbor and 3-5-7 (although 3-5-7 is starting to make some appearances in Vegas).

I didn't start playing until about 2000, right when I started my current job. I bought Doyle Brunson's book and immediately became an addict. Both of my DVR's are full of World Poker Tour and WSOP action, and whenever it's on TV, no matter if I've seen the outcome and know what's about to happen, I can't change the channel. Favorite player is Houston's own, Sammy Farha. Dude is slick with the cards, but he's also all class.

I play online at Poker Stars and other URL's nightly, and my buddies and I have nice game going every Saturday possible...although it's competitive, it's still mostly about the beers and sports talk. And sometimes boobies. We usually start out playing No limit Hold 'Em, but always end up throwin' down some Seven Card Stud.

I am LonghornFan. I am an addict.

    :)

I love poker, but I won't play it for money. I'd become addicted within seconds.

Same here. Screw your neighbor is a lot of fun after a few beers.

Personally, I'm sick of the poker/gambling fad.

I played a little in college but have really gotten into it since the Hold 'Em craze.
I play at least once a week.
I really don't like the on-line poker though. I like to play and socialize. I don't claim to be any good at reading people but it makes it more interesting to study habits.

I started playing as a kid by losing my christmas money to my uncle who was a pro hustler (cards and pool). He never held a job that I know of. When I was 8 he taught me to deal the second card or the bottom card, and numerous other cheats. I hate cheating for this very reason. He should have never showed me his tricks. I won a rolex off of him when I was 12 by beating him at 3 out of 5 games of 9 ball and he never would play me for money after that.

7 card stud was my game before I became hooked on TX holdem about 4 years ago. Now it's all I play. I have some friends that I play with weekly (or as often as we can). We play 2 No limit tournaments, 10 buy in for each game, winner take all.

Oh and I don't play for money on-line. Too many ways to get cheated.

I've been playing for years, but its getting so old seeing all the promos for playing poker, seeing WS of Poker cards and chips being marketed at Foley's etc...Hell, even this morning, i was working out and on ESPN, they advertised the "secrets" of winning and playing poker for 9.99 on DirecTV...Way over exposed...

I started playing around this time my senior year in high school, so I'm right on the edge of the three years. In the dorms last year we played nearly everyday. It got to be semi-ridiculous.

Question: When you play poker in Vegas in the poker rooms, how does the casino make money? You are playing other guests, correct?

Do you have to buy time at a table, does the casino take a % of winnings?

this is the most common. i've been to a few places that charge hourly to use their tables and dealer. usually about 5 bucks an hour per player, which is actually usually less than the typical rake fee.

when i'm at home i play at least twice a week, one home buy in tournament - $50 winner takes all -- and one trip to the casino.

at university i only play at the casino - at least once a week but up to 3 times isn't uncommon. i play for quarters sometimes in the dorm - but there's not too many poker guys at my dorm -- alberta's not really a trend following place.
