The four-country tounament is ended. We need to wait for three weeks to see Ming's next show at the end of July at Turkey Tounament. I have an idea. Why don't we write something and send it to Ming? Yao Ming has felt a great pressure since he was draft as #1 pick. NBA, Houston and Rockets are all new and strange to him. If the fans here can write some encouraging and supportive words to him, I think he will be very happy.

So please write something to Yao Ming at this thread. Anything you want to say to him. It's a good chance to show the kindness, friendliness and warmth of you Houstonian, Texian, American or worldwide basketball fans to Yao Ming. Say some suggestions or some funny things of Houston.

Yao Ming, you must feel tremendous pressure on you due to the several stress factors in your life including: media, international spotlight, and people who seem to want you to fail. However, remember that in Houston, you will be treated to our "Southern Hospitality" and we will support you through thick and thin and treat you like family here. There are several like me who support you right now! We hope that you make Houston your second home. We Houstonians love our Rockets, and now that you are one of them, there are several of us who will hope for the best, but will not lose faith in you if the pressure gets to you. We will always have faith in your potential, and will most definitely wait with patience understanding that the day you reach it is coMING!

    One of your loyal fans...
    P.S. I'm not even Chinese

Yao, it was very encouraging for Rockets' fans to hear you say how you want to be able to beat Shaq, and how you will work very hard to do so. I personally will get much enjoyment in watching Shaq rip you a new one. Maybe you don't realize this since you are from another country but there is a saying in the U.S. ... "Don't wake a sleeping Giant" ... I am afraid (for you) that you just pissed off the biggest/strongest man in the NBA. You may one day be better than Shaq (maybe 10 years from now) but until then you will have to settle with getting your a$$ handed to you on a regular basis. Hope you enjoy your stay in the U.S. and welcome to the NBA.

    P.S.
Watch out for those elbows. Ref's never call those on Shaq.

Yao, I hope you don't feel too much pressure. Just improve yourself every year and some day you will show everyone what you can do. Oh, please lift weights to improve your upper body. You will need it in the NBA.

Your fan from the Middle East.

    Yao Ming,

We are looking forward to you joining our favorite team, the Houston Rockets. We have heard a lot about your skills as a basketball player, and are anxious to see them in person.

However, the thing that most impresses me, is your sincerity and humble approach to the game. Too often in the USA we are caught up in trying to look good rather then trying to win the game. It will be very refreshing to have someone of your quality and character playing on our team.

You are just starting your career, and I personally am glad that it is with my favorite team. The Houston Rockets welcome you Yao Ming, but more importantly, the fans welcome you.

    WELCOME YAO MING !!!

May you bring to our team a sense of honor and character.

    DaDakota

Hello Yao. I just want to let you know that you are already better than 90% of the Centers in the NBA so do not worry much about what some of the critics say.

    Great idea, windandsea.

Yao, I can already tell that you will be one of my favorite athletes. Despite all the negative media attention from other cities, I am proud to see that you have maintained a positive and upbeat attitude about playing here. I can assure you that the city of Houston and the Rockets team will welcome you with open arms. The Rockets have an excellent internal chemistry within the current players, and your strengths and personality should both fit in well.

Don't worry about any set number of statistics that the media may throw at you. Many of them do not follow basketball as closely as they should, and don't understand the difficulty in the transition to the NBA. All we ask is that you prepare yourself mentally and physically for the rigors of an NBA season. We know you are a talented player, and that the production will come. Don't concern yourself so much with the pressure the media will try and place on you. Just try your best, and we will all be in your corner, whether it takes a month, a year, or three years for you to become a star player. I wish you the best of luck, Yao, and I can't wait to cheer for you in Houston. For the record, I am not Chinese either...

Howdy Yao!! Everyone down here in Houston is ecstatic about you playing for the Rockets!! Take it easy and don't get frustrated with ignorant critics and doubters. The rest of us (the majority) cannot wait to see you play. You have an excellent attitude that even your detractors will come to admire. Good Luck through your summer games. Stay Humble, Stay Hungry.

Hi Yao Ming, there are three important things:

    1. Because your training time is limited and the stake is so high, You have to take extreme measure. Please put ALL of your time on weight lifting and eating. I mean ALL available time you can find. Don't spend time on your shooting, passing, running anymore, 'cause you are already better than (almost) any other center in NBA in those categories and further improvement in those areas need to be under NBA coach guidance. Wang ZhiZhi found out this hard lesson (lack of strength/muscle) after two long unproductive years, and how badly he want to fix those problems? He is staying in US at the cost of possibly being banned from the national team and other huge consequences. So please, to avoid regreting in the future, work on it now, and don't pay any attention to the crappy training in Chinese National Team.
I even have a formula for you: For every pound of muscle you gain in the next two years, you will earn an extra $2 million dollars in your career in NBA. ( and I am only half kidding here).
So put up muscle, mucle, muscle, muscle please.

    2. Contact Wang Zhizhi frequently to get inside information about everything in NBA, from dealing with coach, teammates, staff, media to how to get more playing time, to how to deal with foul trouble. You current status can help him. And his hard-earned experience will benefit you.

    3. You WILL be a star player after three years. But be prepared to stay on the bench a lot of time or play lot of garbage time in the first year. Because in a closely contested game (most NBA games are, and RT wants to win games), your lack of NBA level defense skill will keep you in the bench.

Love you, Yao. Defense is not easy to learn, speed is not easy to gain. So just put on muscle, muscle, muscle, muscle, muscle, muscle, muscle, and you are the man.

My wife was screaming at every sight of you, Yao Ming. She wants to tell you USA is a good place to make a home. Your dream will come true. You are in her every dream.

I tried to get her back to LA by telling her Houston is hot in summer, no one is taking care of her, there is no Ming until October anyway. Her answer was: Houston is already a town in Ming Dynasty. end of story.

Yao Ming, I saw you in the Olympic Games 2000 AD. As a former International Track & Field Coach I immediately saw in you certain characteristics which I observe in my future Track Students. You have Grace of Movement and a certain muscular flow in that movement that is characteristic of Champion Athletes. The first thing in my mind was.... how wonderful he would be for the Rockets! (Houston).I wonder how the Rockets would go about making plans for you. I considered it a lost cause and it was something beyond my ability to effect. Now in 2002 comes and the Rockets have the fifth pick in the NBA Draft and you have declared for the draft. Again I ask what can the Rockets do to get you? It seems they are not making any effort. On the internet we had the opportunity to play a Mock Draft. On the evening prior to the Order Selection I played with three chances ..The Rockets got a first and a second.. Lucky you say. Then on the day of the Order Selection I repeated the same with a first and a second again I thaught only one thing YAO MING.. thank you God!! It all happened as I wished it would!! I have been making Chinese Red T Shirts saying YAO MING in Yellow. You are most welcome in Houston and the Southern Hospitality will take good care of you and I think you will enjoy it very much and stay a long time with us. See you in Houston Joe Walker

    Yao,

We are all waiting in great anticipation for your arrival to the United States as a Houston Rocket. We know the journey for you to become a great NBA player will be a long and challenging road. Do not worry about the expectations of the fans. To know you are striving for the best and giving your full effort night in and night out will please us.

It takes many years in this league to become a great player. Hakeem, Jordan and Shaq didn't win championships in their first few years in the league, so don't worry. We want you to enjoy your experience here, become a better basketball player and person, and in the future, do your best to help us win a NBA championship. Houston is a patient city, and most fans will understand you need several years to improve your talents. Your first few years are a learning experience, so enjoy them and soak up as much knowledge as you can. This is an exciting time for the city of Houston, and should be a wonderful time for you.

Thank you for your great attitude towards the city of Houston, and I hope you enjoy every minute you are here.

    B
