I am so happy! I knew this day would come! Why am I happy? Because my car is totaled! The car I drive is a 1993 piece of **** Saturn that my wife bought before I ever met her. In 1997, we bought a new Toyoa for me, but she ended up driving it, and I got stuck with the Saturd (we gave it a more appropriate name). well, I just got word from the mechanic that it needs its alternator replaced, it has multiple coolant leaks, has an oil leak inside the valve cover that leaks oil into the spark plug holes, has an elbow hose leak which allows dirty air to get into the engine, and needs a PCV valve replacement, and possibly more repairs (the mechanic hasn't finished his check yet). Total estimated price for repair so far would be $1266.34 Kelly Blue Book trade-in value for this car: $550 (<-LOL!). Finally, I don't have to drive this turd any more!!! The time has come for us to buy a new car. We can't decide between a Toyota Camry or a Honda Oddysey (minivan). We definitely will buy only Honda or Toyota. Oh happy day! Well, I gotta figure out what to do with this car. I could call Pick-a-part and have them pick it up. But I think I could get more money for it if it was stolen, and I could collect on an insurance claim. One problem I haven't worked out: if the car doesn't drive, a thief probably won't steal it. They might strip it, I guess, but I don't know how much insurance I could get for that. Any thoughts on what to do with it?
well since you have some written evidence that you do want the car stolen i wouldn't take that route haha.
tell me about junk Saturns. I have a 94 Saturn that my wife still drives and it is had all sort of problems, I am hoping it will last until next summer when I will most likely get another camery (I have a 97 camery and it never gave me any problem) or maybe an accord.
If if, by the remote chance that the insurance companies are watching this bbs, they see this thread, they don't know who I am. And I don't think I'm really serious about having the car stolen intentionally. I'm a pretty unlucky guy and plans like that usually blow up in my face.
Camry's and Accords have a hell of a lot of room for kids and any extra luggage they need. Unless they got a Litter of kids i would go with the Camry. You have about the same amount of trunk space, until you take out the seats of course...but i just can't drive a mini van.
drox If you want to get rid of it, email me through the board. I have contacts with lots of buyers who will pay you for whats left of it.
We have one kid, and we intend to have another within 2 years. Having a minivan would be super-helpful. We could carry around my family and a couple of grandparents all in one car.
I drove my mom's friends old 1994 odessy last week cuase we were shipping my sisters car to California and they were letting us borrow that car. Man i swear to god the car felt like it was towing something like that commercial. It wouldn't go anywhere and i felt so weird driving it....not to mention leaving it at the Valet at Trulucks that night and i am the one stepping out of it...i don't think i will get a mini van ever. I mean ill stick to SUV if i want more room.
Really!?!?! Super cool! This would probably be perfect - The engine is in excellent condition (always kept the oil changed), the AC blows cold, the wheels are nice and I'm sure there are a bazillion other parts on the car that would come in useful. My wife and I are gathering our thoughts on what we're gonna do, and I'll probably email you within 7 days. thanks!
that's what my wife says!! i think she thinks she's too young to drive that car, despite the fact we have 2 kids it's funny! she'd be all about a tahoe or suburban...but i'm not real interested in buying a car that big.
Then why don't you stick to something like the Envoy or the smaller line of SUV's they aren't that big and they still have a lot of room.
SUV's are nice (we especially like the Toyota Sequoia), but their gas mileage is a LOT worse than a minivan's, and even at recently dropped prices, they cost a lot more. I have a small SUV (that Toyota I mentioned is a 1997 Rav4) and lemme tell ya, driving that is like riding around in an Igloo cooler on wheels.
If you do end up getting a mini-van, please don't become like those other mini-van drivers who think they are in a Rally car.
Yeah the RAV 4 is a lot smaller though. I was talking more the Envoy, Toyota Highlander. Along those lines. Just a bit Smaller than a regular sized suv but not the IGLOO your driving =) They are basically a taller car and that's it.
We have a 2004 Pilot that get better gas mileage than my friends 2004 Odessy even though they both have the exact same engine. I'm guessing the Odessy is heavier. 27 highway (at 80+mph - 2000 rpm) / 21 city (up and down mountains near daily) for a 8 passenger SUV is outstanding imo. My complaints are: At 40mph+, you cannot roll just the back window(s) down without some serious "vibration" noise. If you roll one of the front windows down the "vibration" noise disappears. Also, not sure about Toyotas, but at 100,000 miles the time belt needs to be replaced - around $1000. Why they didn't go with a chain instead is beyond me. The Pilot has to have the differential fluid changed every 7500 miles which is a pain - $50. My friend has a complaint because his package (Touring?) only comes with run-flat tires and he had a flat on vacation that could only be fixed at a Honda dealer (who had to special order it - ie wait a day) and it cost him almost $500 to fix it. So while you do have a more reliable vehicle, it does cost more to maintain than others.
drox... even in the shape it is in right now...you can easily sell it for what the blue book is...*someone* will pay 600 for a car that still runs. easy. you might even be able to get 700-800 for it...I have had ppl offer me over 1k for a truck I used to have that did not run.
