I mean in his day... yeah good player but
I don't think he'll ever be as good as Walt Williams is now.
At least Walt is still mobile-ish
Rice will be a defensive liability against darn near everyone

I agree - Glen Rice is the boat anchor on this ship. Do we buy out his contract?- still would count against the cap and push us into the luxury tax. I do not know what to do with him. He limits us on dealing for players. We have too much of the Hakeem cap room tied up in him.

This was a bigger mistake than Matt Maloney, but not as bad as the Pippen aquisition.

Let's give Rice a chance to get well before we write him off. Everybody was writing Collier off (and still are) but Jason is showing some promise. Next year, if Rice craters due to injury or age, then we can consider a thread like this.

It does no good for Rice to retire. We still have to pay him, and he still counts against the cap. I don't think it's entirely unreasonable to account his poor performance this year to being fat because he had to sit on his ass all summer because of his foot.

I remember how good and refreshing his attitude was when he got here, and I also remembers moments when you could see that there was a pretty good player in there somewhere, specifically the game @ New York. Also, remember that last year he managed to play pretty well and was at least a functional shooter.

I think that the best position to take on Rice is to plan as if he never will play again, but not be supprised if he manages to come back and start next year and put up numbers like he did last year in New York. If we draft a talented, young guy at the 3 and Rice comes back, the worst that happens is that the young guy gets extra time to develop his game.

Keep in mind -- even as poorly as he played this year, he was just about the only post up player I've seen on the Rockets get double teamed consistantly.

This type of thing is almost as common as "trade ____ " and "_____ sucks" threads. Every year, someone is injured and they get written off because we don't see them play. Then, miraculously, they recover and begin to play well and everyone conveinently forgets the injury.

I don't care if the rockets get a single point from the 3 spot
I want a player that defends well

    just my own personal opinion
I think a good defender would help the rockets offense more than any 3pt deadeye shooter by causing turnovers and poor shots by the opposing team.

I do not know about you guys but I arrive at the compaq center an hour before tip off and see Rice shooting 3 bombs all the time and makes 93% of them.
I say we stick him in a uniform let him stand at the 3 point line and shoot bombers he don't look like season ending surgery to me. The way he is shooting and using his strength he could be helping us a tad.:p

Troy, I see that every time I attend a Rockets game too. He is really making the 3's very consistently. I guess he shoots over 100 3's before every game. Let's see if he can help us next year before dumping him.

    Troy and Rocketability:

I see him too. dude shoots more like 200, because he is out there shooting for a good 1 to 1.5 hours. I have noticed he is getting more lift each time too. he knocks those down at 90%plus clips from all over. When he was active, I used to watch him in warmups and he was not near this accurate still. I bet you that combined with the daily workouts, he must be shooting 300 at least every day! Let's give this guy a break and a shot and see what he can bring next year when he has not foot and knew ailment, because the guy can flat out shoot better than anyone I have seen.

Its a little different when he may go 2 or 3 possessions without feeling the spaulding on the ball. Believe me when I say the worst thing for a player like Rice is to standstill and wait for the ball. I guess I'm back to square 1 with this one, so I'll leave it at that.

I realize I have not given Rice a chance, but I had high hopes of what we would use the Hakeem cap room money for. I really thought we could get a quality inside presence with more than 12 million in cap room.

Now that we are stuck with the 9 million + Rice contract next season and the next, we should make the best of it and support him and hope for the best.

There is nothing else to do- you can't trade a broken down player like that, and if you buy out the contract it still costs money and counts against the salary cap.

    We have no options........

TBar, you mean we're screwed. With two guys who no one else in their right mind would take with their current contracts - Maurice Taylor and Glen Rice. Then, if the Rockets stay true to form, they'll offer a long term high dollar deal to Walt Williams out of loyalty.
