Its like a Virutal Online Community. You can go on there and meet other players, swap crap, play against eachother. You can setup your own house with all kinds of pointless stuff. more here.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Playstation_Home
This is getting ridiculous, Sony needs to just put it out there, because the longer the wait, the bigger the letdown.
The Wiki link describes it pretty well, but it basically seems like a service that Sony wants users to launch from when playing their games. Sort of like a lobby for all PS3 games. A couple of friends could meet up somewhere (probably someone's virtual apartment), and decide to play COD4. Home would provide a means for each user to launch right into the game and into an online match. When they're done with COD4, they'll return to Home, where they can launch another game (Resistance, NBA 2k, Warhawk, etc.) or just socialize with their friends (sharing music/movies or playing more casual games that are in Home like chess, bowling, billiards, etc). Home would also provide some of the features that XBL currently provides for 360 users. For example, the trophy system more or less offers the same as the achievement system of XBL (probably offers more, although it depends on how developers take advantage of it). In addition to that, some developers could complement their games with spaces in Home. Naughty Dog, for example, plans to allow players to explore the world of Uncharted in Home (w/o being attacked), and they'll also be providing a 2D sidescroller game to go along with it (apparently a mix between Contra and Out of this World). Warhawk has some sort of planning room that can be used in-between matches to help teams coordinate their attacks, and Resistance lets you see/hear the stuff that got cut from the game. Probably a ton of different things that developers could implement to complement their games. It is kind of hard to describe since there are a lot of possibilities, even just for game-specific applications (of course, you can just run around the world and "waste" time talking or whatever). Of course, I guess these "endless possibilities" are what makes it so difficult for Sony to get up-and-running. Maybe they should have thought about that before putting out a release date every 3-6 months. Videos might help: http://www.gametrailers.com/game/4865.html Agreed. At this point, I sort of expect things to be perfect when Home launches. If they launched it last Fall or this Spring, I could have lived with some missing features, bugs/glitches, etc. If Sony is going to take this long with it, they better have everything implemented whenever Fall 08 comes around...or whenever they finally decide to launch Home. I know this is unrealistic, but perhaps Sony shouldn't have made it seem like Home was more or less done months ago.
As a PS3 owner, Home is about a 2 on a scale of 1-10 of how much I care. And that number's only going down the longer it gets delayed. I'm slightly interested in the idea of an improved online lobby system in general... but I'm not a huge online guy as it is. Sony needs to just get the thing out... maybe I'll start to care.
my buddy was really excited about the prospect of this when he got a ps3 two years ago or so its a giant waste of time, imo
agreed...it's a good concept, but until we all see it, it'll be hard to truly find out its capabilities...
I think there are a lot of people that care about Home, or at least the potential that Home brings to the PS3 (especially in connecting gamers to developers). But yeah, these delays are definitely killing the interest. I used to be really interested in Home, and I still am to a degree, but I'm starting to lump it together with Sony's digital media service. And that's not a good sign. As much as I like some of the things Sony is doing on the software side of things, they sure have been terrible at predicting when things would be ready for release. Still waiting for that LittleBigPlanet beta as well.
yeah, when sony says "coming soon" like their home trailer it means 3+years i remember them talking about home in 2005. why dont they just admit that there will probably never be a home. ok, maybe there will be a home, but damn.. hurry the .... up
Me too. I have an interest in Home and how it works, but GTA is all that will be on my PS3 for the next several months. (OK maybe Pixel Junk Encore if it comes out soon, but there's no date on it yet.)
The two features are sort of linked, so working on Home has allowed them to work on in-game XMB as well (or at least something similar). Maybe the priorities aren't quite where we'd like it though. If Home launched last Fall (or even this Spring) together with in-game XMB, I don't think people would mind it so much. I think people are now growing impatient with the lack of in-game XMB and rightfully so (doesn't help that Sony teases about it too). They'd probably be better off making it a higher priority and releasing it ahead of Home if possible...which it sounds like they're doing. The bad thing was that Home actually wasn't announced until March 2007, barely a year ago. I don't think I would mind waiting over a year for Home, especially since it is pretty ambitious. My problem is that Sony acted like it was nearly done last year. IIRC, they sent out beta invites shortly after the announcement and promised to invite more people as the months past, eventually leading up to the open beta in the Fall. It seemed like they had a nice release schedule planned out. Of course, none of that mattered. I'm sure it occurred a lot last generation, but I've been really bothered by the "broken promises" for many games/features in the last few years. Sony is definitely one of the worst offenders, but other developers/publishers have been pretty bad at it too. For example, Rockstar said back in 2006 IIRC that GTA IV would hit store shelves in October 2007. I don't have a problem with GTA IV being released in April 2008 instead (the game definitely needed the extra time), but maybe these guys should thoroughly test their products before they start putting out relatively specific release dates. I know it hurts the hype train a bit, but it isn't like these delays are helping any either. I'll take "when it's done" over "Fall 07...I mean Spring 08... actually I really mean next Fall" anytime.
