What are ya'll planning on getting? I think I'm gonna go w/ ps3, I was reading somewhere that Microsoft might have tried to push xbox360 out too fast and that it could be the next Dreamcast. Xbox360 has different "packages" you can buy, PS3 will just have 1 bundle you can buy, I think it'll be a lot easier that way.
That actually hasn't been determined yet, but I don't think Sony really likes the idea of multiple SKU's. I think they experimented with it in Japan with the PSP, but it didn't work out so well, so they just offered the value pack here in the US and Europe. And um..uh...yeah, I don't think I have say anything about my preference.
I don't think there's enough hard facts/evidence with the PS3 to really be able to make a judgement. They'll both likely have some great stuff on them. Though, "I read it'll be the next Dreamcast" is a pretty shallow way to make the call.
I might get the PS3 some day. But not in the near future. I'll stick to my nVidia 6800GT OC for a few years.
The one that's the best to mod.. because the 360 is going to come out first I'm sure they will have it hacked before the ps3 comes out, so I would think I would be going with that.. if the 360 is out and it looks really crappy I'll hold off till the ps3 and see what they have to offer.. I really dont care about the brand, just ease of use...
The next 10 days or so should be a great indication of how the PS3 is shaping up. TGS starts on the 16th, I believe. Sony has the largest booth there, and a few PS3 titles are already scheduled to be shown. Kojima has already said that they will show a realtime trailer for MGS4 running on PS3 hardware; if that is anything like the MGS2 clip... Some RSX details should hopefully be getting out soon as well. That will help the overall picture of how powerful the PS3 might be. Basically, a lot more should be known about the PS3 by the end of the month...hopefully.
From what I've read, blu-ray will have more storage capacity, however because of the way it formats its discs, it will be EXTREMELY sensitive to any sort of scratches or slight defects with it, unlike our present day sturdy DVDs. Also, some companies are choosing blu-ray because of its additional security features, which I've read includes the ability to shut down a blu-ray player offsite if a pirated disc is detected. They wil be able to achieve this because blu-ray machines will need to be connected via broadband or phone line, much like DirecTV.
I wouldn't worry about the scratch thing. TDK came up with a really strong coating for it, so I doubt it will be a problem; I don't think it will be any worse than this-gen, that's for sure. As far as the security features, AFAIK, BR players do NOT require an internet connection. I can't remember the specifics, but I do remember that part, or at least something positive regarding that. If I have some time, I can try to get a better answer on that. The security stuff doesn't really bother me too much. I guess if you (not you hotballa, the general "you") pirate stuff, then you should be worried, but I doubt it will affect me too much. The movie/game studios can do whatever they want as long as it doesn't really effect anything I'm doing. AFAIK, I don't think that will happen. And it isn't like these features would be specific to BR. I think HD-DVD has a similar protection, and I'm sure any other movie format would have it as well if it wants strong movie studio support. If you want to watch HD movies, you may experience some beefed up security features. I'll try to read up on these issues a bit more in order to give a better answer. I never really got any negative reactions towards them, so I assumed it shouldn't be a problem. If I'm wrong, I'll try to correct those statements. I just always felt like those were non-issues.
Can someone list the pros and cons of each and compare them? From what I've read, the PS3 seems to be the clear winner on hardware capabilities overall, with the XBox 360 maybe having the edge in online gaming. When I talk to some people who (seem) to know more than me, they say the XBox 360 will be better. Since I've got a PS2 now, it's a no-brainer decision for me. When arguing one way or the other, please mention which platform you currently have. Most people I talk to have the XBox, so their pro-360 stance seems very biased to me. On the Blu-ray vs. HD issue, it's clear that if only one standard survives, it will be Blu-ray. It's possible both formats survive for quite some time, but if you go HD, it's possible your hardware will be irrelevant in the future. Unfortunately, negotiations to unite under a single standard broke down recently and consumers will suffer the consequences.
Ditto - The only system that sounds intriguing. The others bore me to death with the "same sh*t, upgraded graphics" approach.
At this point, the Revolution is the only system I'm relatively sure I'll have from day one. I don't even care about tech specs; it's a Nintendo system, and as such, I don't expect it to really matter. It'll have the back catalog, which is awesome, and games that will be fun and creative, which is fine with me. That's what I play games for. As long as it doesn't clock in at $400+, it's an easy decision for me.
