I'd like to read your ideas.

Why has no one been able to come up with a solution for this poor junk defense?

Why isn't it as simple as throw the ball to the baseline to a cutting Battier who then quick passes it to Yao for the dunk? Or why not have McGrady/James penetrate and run their defender right into Yao's defender and essentially use Yao as a screen to get to the rim for the layup? Or James/McGrady should be told that when Yao is fronted to just fire up the 3 ball so he can board and put it back down. James fires up junk all day long. We should turn the old fashioned lob play into a shot and putback. Why not bring back the Malone play throw the ball off the glass and let Yao pick it up and cram it?

I just do not understand why we haven't put in plays designed to get the ball to Yao for jams when the D is laying on him from the topside. We should have several variations of the above. It has to be quick passes to the baseline and then back into Yao diving to the goal. When the defense has him sealed frontside, he basically has them sealed backside. So, he's too slow to catch a lob and the help defense comes back door on him and steals the pass. Don't run that stupid play. Put 2 guys in the corners that can shoot the 3, Battier and James, then have them cut to the basket or shoot the 3 from the corner if the D starts sagging in to help backside on Yao. If the D comes out on them, cut to the bucket, take the pass and they can either finish if no help or if the help D comes over throw it to Yao for the cram.

If I were Adelman, I would have our guards work on angles and learn the angles of ricochet so they can throw it off the glass to Yao.

Another thing, if Yao has his man sealed, we should have the ability to hit Bonzi at the rim when he cuts backdoor. Yao's man cannot come over and help at the rim when he is topside of Yao. We should be killing teams that play that gimmick D, but it seems to cause us so many turnovers and bad shots, and we can't get the ball to Yao for some crazy reason.

    Thoughts?

high post with another low post (Scola)
    outside shooting

We had little success high posting Yao against SA, and also didn't shoot like we need to. The offense is designed to make them pay from the perimeter and we will have problems until we do.

Also, if they front Yao and we swing the ball around the perimeter quick enough then Yao should easily be able to seal off his man and rotate to face the ball and receive the pass. IMO we did not do this enough against the Spurs.

If Yao only had to worry about one defender, I think it would be straight forward.

However, teams usually have another defender sagging towards him. Yao isn't good at catching passes in traffic, particularly when he has to reach out to grab it. If the Rockets space the floor well and make quick passes, and Yao is active in trying to seal the defender, an opening should present itself. But the worst thing we can do is not move the ball quickly when it happens. The players need to react to it almost instinctively, and I'm not sure if our guards (*ahem* Luther *ahem* Mike *ahem*) have it in them.

as I posted in DaDa's stupid overcome the Yao fronting thread......

Yao must stay in the low post, he needs to concede the front and they prepare to get the ball from the other side and seal out, he can do this the rockets used to do this with Cato flashing to the high post.... we now have the perfect player to do this in Scola, flash Scola to the foul line and give him the ball, he has a great shot from there and this is an amazingly easy angle to feed Yao the ball for a dunk/lay-up

As stated in the other thread, backdoor screens by Shane, Scola or Chuck. 2nd option is to quickly reverse the ball back to weakside. Either way fits Adelman's offense perfectly.

For the most part, I think we should give up on the lob passes. They just don't work with Yao.
