So I'm sitting here looking at stats from Basketball-reference.com instead of studying for my huge final tomorrow.

I came across a statistic I didn't know much about: Player Efficiency Rating

I'm not sure if this has been brought up in the past, but maybe someone can better explain what it is? It's been around since 1952. After looking through who is rated, I assume a lot of factors go into it, especially team play.

All I know is TMac is #11 all time (the top 10 consisting of Hall of Famers or sure HOFers) at 23.96, three spots ahead of Hakeem (23.59) and 7 spots ahead of Kobe (23.17).
    Code:

    1	Michael Jordan 27.91
    2	Shaquille O'Neal	27.82
    3	David Robinson 26.18
    4	Wilt Chamberlain*	26.16
    5	Bob Pettit* 25.41
    6	Tim Duncan 25.07
    7	Neil Johnston* 24.78
    8	Charles Barkley*	24.63
    9	Kareem Abdul-Jabbar*	24.58
    10	Magic Johnson* 24.11
    11	Tracy McGrady 23.96
It probably doesn't mean much, but I thought it was pretty interesting. Of course the years in Orlando, TMac was the MVP (using the Steve Nash explanation).

And here's another absolutely amazing stat: Hall of Fame Probability

The top 60 or so are all in the Hall of Fame or are locks to get in. Just for reference, Jordan and Shaq are in the top 10 with .9999, Hakeem is at 20 with .9977. TMac is at # 74 with .7290.

But here's where it gets funny:
    Code:
    101	Stephon Marbury .4521
    102	Steve Francis .4505
    103	Dirk Nowitzki .4432
    :p

What other interesting stats can you come up with?

Juwan's rediculous contract fixed the game. Guys like Tim Duncan probably aren't too thrilled about it though.

These stats don't factor in alot of things

    for example:
Robinson only won a championship w/ Duncan

if one was to come to the conclusion that these were player rankings, no way in hell is Robinson ahead of Olajuwon

Well, just got out of my exam after an all nighter and instead of napping, I'm back researching stats.

I came across the formula for finding the PER:
    http://upload.wikimedia.org/math/4/7/0/4706604464b973bebda830a8dd22fca8.png
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYY too long to post the image here, but   !

    ==============

    On to other stats:
In the Player Wins category (whatever the hell that is), we've got Hakeem at #2 all time...behind "Goose Egg" Malone:
    Code:
    1	Karl Malone	226.07
    2	Hakeem Olajuwon	186.83
    3	Michael Jordan	184.44
    ==============

    NEIL JOHNSTON
    Height: 6' 8"
    Weight: 225

And for more on the obscure Neil Johnston, here's some of his bio:
    • Played basketball at Ohio State
    • Was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies, but never made it to the big leagues
    • The Warriors were interested in the 6' 8" guy, so they took a chance on him
    • Played from 1951-59; lead the NBA in scoring (1952-55), rebounding (1955), and field goal percentage (1953,1956-57)
    • Appeared in six All-Star Games
    • In 1955-56 Johnston, along with Paul Arizin and Tom Gola, led the Warriors to the NBA championship
    • After retirement, he became a coach (including Wilt's first two years)
    • Died in 1978; elected into the Hall in 1990
    Information from: http://www.hoophall.com/halloffamers/Johnston.htm

Learn something new every day I guess.

    ==============

Now on to another stat: Assist/Turnover Ratio

While it might not prove to be much of a stat to some, I view it as a great way to evaluate quality point guards (and other positions too).

    Code:
    1	John Stockton 12.9571
    2 Muggsy Bogues 11.8241
    3 Johnny Moore 10.33924
    4 Magic Johnson 9.586584
    5 Mark Jackson 9.352776
    6 Corey Gaines 9.092907
    7 Brevin Knight 8.994472
    8 Sidney Lowe 8.864407
    9 Kevin Johnson 8.6639
    10 Nate Mcmillan 8.520086
    11 Pooh Richardson 8.216311
    12 Rickey Green 8.005071
    13 Avery Johnson 7.928915
    14 Greg Grant 7.900299
    15 [b]Chris Paul[/b] 7.841225
Two things; first, at #15 all-time is Chris Paul, above the likes of Steve Nash (#17) and Jason Kidd (#18). Granted he's only played in one season, but it will be worth seeing over the next few seasons if this Rookie of the Year's play remains exceptional.

Second, just looking through the top 60 in the category, only 4 ever wore a Houston jersey. Sure, guys like Rod Strickland (#22), Mark Jackson (#5), and Taz (#13) played for the Rockets, but these guys were immensely underwhelming.

Of the games played by the four one-time Rockets in the top 60, 63% of the games played between them were by one man. I present to you the "best" guard to ever play for the Houston Rockets...

    SCOTT BROOKS?!?!

Yes indeed, with his ~6.61 career Assist/Turnover Ratio, Mr. Brooks, at #34 all-time, is the highest rated Rocket that played in a decent amount of games.

Let's hear it for the little guy!

okay, so technically when each of these played with the Rox, Brooks was actually the worst with a rough average PPR of 3.28 for his 2+ year tenure; he was pretty good in '92-'93 with a 5.94, playing in all 82 games; but hey, how can one avoid giving the good Scottie some love?

he didn't quit; he just sucked

Man, imagine what a REAL point guard could do for this team!

How could you not know what "player efficiency" is? There was a "Yao's PER" thread about it every day during the season! :D

If McGrady remains healthy and plays through the age of 35 or so at/near his career-averages, he's a definite HOF.

However, much like Grant Hill, we all know how quickly that can be derailed due to no fault of their own :(

Something I posted on another board, using the cool APBRMetrics Labs feature at b-r.com:

Here's the top 10 by age bracket for current players, combining years. The age considered is as of February 1st of a given season. Minimum minutes played set to 500 minutes. Shaq is far and away the most dominating player, as one would expect. And if you're wondering, Kobe just missed out the top 10 for the 18-22 bracket. He was number 12, behind Yao, and had a 20.52 PER. If you look at 18-19 age bracket, he'd be 5th (behind McGrady, LeBron, Carmelo, and Dwight Howard in that order).

    Current Players

    Code:
     	[color="Navy"]Name			Yrs	MP	PER[/color]

And, for fun, here's the top ten lists looking at all players since 1978. People forget how good David Robinson was in his prime. From a statistical perspective, at least, he was awesome.
