Upgrading my tv. Looking at prices, it appears that plasma is significantly cheaper than LCD. However, the LCD doesnt have reflective light issues, which is huge in my small apt.

Anyone have any experience with these?

    Yesterday at Circuit City..

    40" LCD.....$4500
    40" Plasma....$2500

Plasma has a glass screen, which means your wife's reading lamp reflects on screen like any other TV. You can point a flashlight at plasma and it wont show reflection.

    I have DLP, love it.

Didn't really need the space saving concept that LCD or Plasma boasts, nor want to hang on the wall. All three technologies have pluses and minuses, I just thought DLP was best for me. Cheapest on average of the 3 also.

I hear LCD has a longer average life than plasma. They may have solved some of these issues, but it used to be that you could only get 1 year warranties for plasmas, and they averaged ~3 year lifespan.

That's true LCD. You can get rear-projection LCD for much much cheaper. My in-laws just got the 42 inch Sony Wega Rear Projection LCD. I'm watching the Eagles game on it right now...very nice.

IMO, unless you are a real uber-home theatre dude, you should go with something like rear projection LCD or DLP, both of which I beleive are cheaper than comparable sized Plasma or real LCD.

    Read This.

You can get the 60 inch version of what we got for under $4,000

Actually I researched it before picking up the 42" Sony WEGA LCD. Plasma's were most often than not much more expensive, and LCD's had a longer lifespan. Also, when watching channels like TNT and ESPN on plasma, the symbol that stays on the bottom corner of the screen eventually will burn a hole in the tv

LCD, LCoS, or DLP are your best options... I'd stay away from plasmas. Blacks/contrast/etc. have been improved on LCD's and DLP's to the point they are nearly as good as plasmas.

for what it's worth, all of the big players in TV's are putting their money into DLPs, and LCD technology

Plasma won't be around much longer if CES is any indication

Plasma brightness decays after a few years (3 or so, if I recall correctly).

Unless some technological breakthrough is on the horizon, that's exactly what I've been reading as well in various publications.

I dont understand all the hype around DLP, Plasma and LCD HDTVs... For the best picture a HD flatscreen CRT is still the best...

The hype is that you no longer need to have a monster 40" tv that weighs over 250 lbs. sitting like an eyesore in your living room. Also, try hanging a large rear projection CRT TV on your wall. :D

DLP, LCD, and LCoS will eventually catch up to CRTs. Many manufacturers have begun phasing CRT technology out already or scale back production drastically.

Yeah I hear ya, but the pictures on the above TVs are still lacking... If it is all about size why not buy a projector? If I am buying a TV I want it to have the best picture... I dont understand many fads, we like our SUVs HUGE and our TVs SMALL no matter the loss of performance or the high cost..

If you moved from a 2200 sq ft townhouse with a backyard in Houston to a 800 sq ft apt in Manhattan, you'd understand the desire for a wall mounted tv.

A projector is the only way to go IMHO.

You can use it for TV, movies, and video games, as well as the computer.

A very good one can be had for around $2200.....with resolutions greater than HDTV.

We have 2 at the office, and

"yes, they are real, and they are are magnificent".
