Anyone planning a trip to Libya any time soon? Travel has opened up there. Though all travel has to be part of a group, and folks aren't allowed to freelance around the country.

Libya does have the best preserved Roman ruins in the world today, miles and miles of uncrowded, gorgeous, mediterranean coast line with a cheap prcie tag. Now would be the time to go before 'ugly tourists' come and sour the locals' atttitude towards visitors.

I don't have reservations, but I am saving up, and my Asia trip that I've wanted to take, might have to be changed in order to take advantage of this opportunity.

I'd like to go there one day, but I think, in that region, I will go to Lebanon first.

I think you need to differentiate. Right now, there is no way I would want to go to Saudi Arabia or Jordan, and obviously not Iraq...but I think at least Dubai is safe.

Dubai might be the single safest place in the world.

UAE sucks in the summer, but November through April is suppose to be just perfect. Super hot women, some of the best beaches, shopping, restaurants, etc. This place has anything one could ever want.

Love to go, but -- like the million other places I intend to visit -- Libya has to wait until I have money.

Damn homey, at least read up on it before lumping all middle eastern countries as terrorist organizations. Have you been there? How do you know its dangerous to Americans? Yeah I am brown and most people over there are brown so I dont even stand out. But you see many many Americans, British, Aussies, Russians, Germans, French, Chinese, Africans, etc over there. The place literally has no crime whatsoever. The place is just as safe if you are a white American or a brown Indian.

We Americans are kinda ignorant when it comes to places around the globe. To us USA is the safest and everything else is second class. Especially when it comes to Midde East. Iran, Iraq, Saudi, Afghanistan are just a few of the countries in the Middle East. There are places like UAE, Jordan, Lebanon, Oman, Bahrain that are just beautiful and big time tourists magnets. Safe as anything else in the world.

I would certainly not be 100 % sure that there could never be a terror attack in Dubai against Westerners. But then again, that could nowadays happen practically anywhere in the world, sad as that is.

At the same time, I think it is fair to say that you will now most probably be safer anywhere at any time in Dubai, even with that remote possibility of terrorist action, than at night on Richmond Street in Houston.

Anyone have pictures of the Roman Ruins? roman history is probably my favorite of all civilizations. Someday I want to study it utterly thoroughly.

Of course there is a possibility that a terrorist attack might take place in Dubai. But like you said unfortunately that can happen anywhere in the world during times like these. I am just basing my opinion on its track record so far. The government of Dubai has to try twice as hard to keep its country safe and clean. They already know that people are skeptical of a counrty in the Middle East (as evident in this thread) and they are trying to lure big time foriegn investmenst. They know one single act of terror can ruin everything they have created so far.

I myself am working on a large scale business venture in the GCC countries and have thought and researched on on the safety and what not. If I didnt think it was safe for Americans I would never go there to begin with.

At the same time, I think it is fair to say that you will now most probably be safer anywhere at any time in Dubai, even with that remote possibility of terrorist action, than at night on Richmond Street in Houston.

Crimes like rape and murder are practically non existant in Dubai. Of course there are a few cases, but a hot girl can be scantily dressed and walking the streets at 3AM in Dubai and no one will bother her. As a matter of fact there are girls that are doing that right now. Prostitution is one thing that Dubai is popular for.

No, no, no.... you are assuming that I am "lumping all middle eastern countries as terrorist organizations" - I never called anyone a terrorist. I am merely stating that Middle Eastern countries (and Libya) are not safe places for Americans. That's all.

It's so amazing to see those photos and then imagine the setting when it was inhabited.
