Ok...I had completely forgotten about the ending of the newer Planet of the Apes (POTA), but as I was skimming through the "Best Ending" thread, this question came back to me. BEGIN SPOILER QUESTION Can somebody...anybody...explain to me why at the end when the guy came back to earth, he came back to an Earth ruled by apes? END SPOILER QUESTION Now that this question has been rehashed in my mind, I must know the answer...
Man oh man. I saw this movie when with a bunch of coworkers on a weeknight and we spent a good 3 hours in a heated discussion trying to come to a consensus about the reasoning for th end. We discussed everything from evolution to time warps. I mean there was screaming, yelling, temper-tantrums thrown, etc. Never let it be said that Software Engineers have no emotions! Of course we broke for lunch and just forgot about it afterwards. No singular explanation could be agreed upon. Sorta like "Magnolia" I guess, just to make you think!
My guess is that it had to do with the original test monkey going into the past and changing things if you ask me... who knows though. I know we had a thread about it... let me find it.
I thought the point of the movie(as was the point of the origianl movie) was that he never left earth (the original has them finding the Statue of Liberty). He was caught up in a time warp, black hole, whatever and ended up in the future and crashed on Earth, which had over the course of the time he skipped devolved into a planet overrun by apes with higher order thinking skills.I had never even considered that it was the same time but that the test monkey went back in time.
My wife is a big fan of the original POTA movies, so we spent some time discussing the answer to this question. Where we arrived at was that somehow Thade (the military ape), who was trapped within the wrecked spaceship, escaped and used one of the travel pods used by Marky Mark and his chimp early in the movie to travel to Earth. He also would have had to have hit one of the wormholes hit by Marky Mark to go back in time and arive before Marky did at the movie's conclusion and start the new ape civilization. Thade definitely made it to Earth somehow because the Lincoln Memorial shown at the movie's climax was now the Thade Memorial, and it also had some text calling Thade the savior of the apes or something along those lines..
In the original, it seems to be Heston comes back to the future. In the remake it, terrible movie, Marky Mark seems to come back to a different kind of Earth.
Thanks that clears up my confusion. I have seen the old one several times but the newer one just once so I was getting them a little mixed up. CK
i only saw the remake, and i thought the endings sucks, there was no way the earth would heve been dominated by apes.nothing changed on earth because of that planet. so it was just a terrible ending, i didn't like the remake, and haven't seen the original
I think whoever made the movie is just an idiot. There is really no way to rationalize that ending with any of the information provided in the film. I'm not even talking about making a leap of faith. Plain and simple, the ending made no sense whatsoever.
I thought it was a time warp anamoly thing. Chimp goes in first. Marky goes in minutes after. Mother ship goes in days after. Mothership arrives first Marky arrives years after. Chimp arrives days after Marky. Marky leaves and reenters. Thane and monkey army leave many years later. Thane's monkey army arrives many centuries earlier. (at least pre-Honest Abe) Monkey has become the Man.
How about: After Marky leaves the planet of the apes, an old-line group of chimps figure out how to time travel, and go back to pre-Civil War earth and takeover. Kind of along the line of the Terminator.
