TV is saying that it was a Muslim woman with a note from Al-Quida

Is this Al Queida having a go and letting the world know that they can still get through increased security?

There are only 2 ways to win this fight.

    1. Total War or Genocide - Do the Milosovic/Hitler method and start whiping out all Muslims.

    2. Win the hearts and minds - Use propaganda and culture to influence generations of Muslims around the world and win them over.

Obviously number 1 is not a good option, so I am having a hard time understanding why we are not more proactive at number 2?

We have a long history of helping the Muslim people - Milosovic etc - yet we keep screwing it up by going to war with a nation and occupation NEVER works....NEVER.

Why can't the USA learn from the past and see that eventually all Theocracies/dictatorships etc will crumble ala the Soviet Union, you just have to use influence instead of bullets.

We should be broadcasting in their language, and providing for the poor peoples over there by building schools etc....not killing their children in war and blaming collatoral damage.

I have to think eventually the populace over in Iran etc will get tired of honor killings and come into the 21st century.

I get queezy when I fly, so often times, I'll have a stiff drink (or 12) on the plane to help me relax.

Let me just say this. If having a screwdriver on a plane (although I prefer a good rum and coke) makes you a terrorist, you can throw my fat ass in the back of a black SUV with tinted windows, set the GPS to 'Guantanamo', and DRIVE.

GOD DAMN you, George W. Bush. GOD DAMN YOU TO HELL.

EDIT: Oh, I think the article is referring to an actual screwdriver, not an OJ with vodka. Nevermind. God dammit anyway.

How did a screw driver end up in a passenger's hand in this day and age?

The POPULACE in iran have tried to riseup, but they were putt down with brutality that is unheard of. in the 2003 uprising, a group of young ladies took off there scarfs as a protest, but they were attacked with acid and chains. were talking about lock chains. they wrere beaten to death infron a huge amount of people who were supporting the students. after they were killed, they bassiji millitants, set there bodies alights and burned then infront of everyone.

It must also be noted, alot of lebaneese hezbollah members were used in those street crackdowns after alot of army generals and revolutionary guard generals failed to attack there fellow iranians.

The chances of a successful uprising against a modern state (i.e. China, Iran, Egypt, Saudi) is very, very slim, no matter how well-armed the populace is. The chances of a successful 'popular uprising' against the Chinese government is next to nil, the chances of successfully overthrowing the Iranian government is next to nil, the chances of doing the same in Egypt is next to nil.

Pretty much the only feasible scenarios are either through a military coup or an outside power coming in and physically removing that regime.

For Iran, the only thing that will bring about a successful overthrowing of the current government is through the military. No amount of domestic uprising or outside help (short of an all-out military invasion, that is) will bring that about.

This is not a weak Lebanese government we're talking about, this is a regime that has thoroughly entrenched itself in the very fiber of Iranian society.

Hate to break it to you, blazer_ben, but short of a military overthrow of the current regime in Tehran, the 'Mollahs' are here to stay. The best manner to bring about change is through building up a strong local opposition that would take part in the process peacefully and -- over time -- bring about change to the system.

If I had to take a wild guess, here's how it went...

Some idiot who has no idea what Arabic looks like or what the 'note' read (assuming a note even exists) thought it would be cool to fabricate a story and passes it off to the media. Then you have the equally idiotic media irresponsibly airing unconfirmed 'reports' based on some idiot who probably can't tell the difference between Arabic and multitude of other languages that 'look' similar, let alone actually be able to read Arabic script well enough to make out "Al-Qaida".

It's mass hysteria and paranoia...nothing more, nothing less.

Isn't jihadism in part a response to Westerners' propaganda and cultural impact, which we imposed through our historical political/economic/military intervention? Will we inevitably end up having to trade cultural influence (liberal society, women's rights, support for Israel) for the sake of military and diplomatic stability?

well it was only a claustrophobic lady who freaked out.

and about helping cause change within islam...we (americans and westerners) can do NOTHING in my opinion. well if we obliterate israel then maybe those freaks will like us for a bit. anyhow, I don't feel like explaining everything about why this is true, but just think about it and try to see why it is true.

Arming what? the Armed forces and some % of the IRGC are not with the mollah's. the question is here is when will see a united opposition front with one goal. it might take 5 to 10 years for that to happen. but you gotta start from somewhere. there is opposition front in iran, but there all on death row. there either imprisoned or there under house arrest.

Hate to break it to you, but the goverment in iran is as popular as it gets. i know this because i've been to iran. there only tool is terror. kill to shutup the populace. there is a local opposition, but there all in prison or there executed. so you're idols( mollahs ) are not saints.

I think we can only distance ourselves from Iran and not support their government in any form or fashion. Other then that, we have to accept Iran as it is. Hopefully this country has learned that democracy is ultimately a choice of the people. It's not something that can be given, it must be taken. It's up to the people of Iran to foster change within their own country. We shouldn't interfere because even good intentions go bad has history painfully reveals.

Let Iran be. If they try to develop nukes, well, we may take them out or isolate them with sanctions...depending on how real of a threat they are assessed to be.
