I have always had this problem of my friends not being good team sports players...

Now the frustrating part is when tournaments come up... Not a big tournament, nothign fancy... Just a simlpe competition...

You have to decide who your team is going to be..

Do you pick your buds and avoid the "so it's like THAT, huh?"

OR do you put together the best team and go for the wins.

I have repeatedly told my closest friends that I would much rather win than "have fun", their way, so they should join a losing team and have fun, ratehr than have fun at teh expense of my team winning.

It sounds a bit harsh, but I'm a competitior. Fun, for me, is winning. Not a cute little move you do with your friend that shows you know each other really well.... No, I've gotta win baby.

Which do you guys normally choose?

depends on the circumstances. at this point of my life, if i'm joining an athletic team it's just to have fun. when i hit the court/field i want to win...and will play to win...but find that the time with friends is really what i'm there for. i wasn't always like that...

We are having this problem with a golf tournament we hold every few months. Guys are starting to bring ringers into a friendly tournament. Now we have to stop having best ball tourneys and scrambles and have handicap tourneys instead. lame.

Doesn't shoot for teams solve this problem?

If I were you, I would play friends first. If there is a large gap in talent after the first game, your friends are pretty sensitive not to want to switch up for a more competitive game. If they dont' switch, tell em to go back to their PC's :D

Do you play strip poker with your gal pals, or Heidi Klum?

    TOUGH DECISION.

    Gal pals.

Heidi Klum doesn't know you or owe you anything.

You might be able to squeeze a little something out of your gal pals.

And if you're thinking, "But all my girl friends are ugly!", then get new girl friends.

The older you get the quicker you find out you have less and less time with your friends.

So take my word on this regrdless of what the sport is (softball, golfing, bowling) go with your friends. You'll always have a good time and in most cases you'll win a few too.

Dude, I think the same way. If you have the winning spirit in you, you want players who give 100%. If you want friends to play for fun, play video games or cards. Competitive sports need competitive players.

    Oh man.

My friends don't owe me anything. Self is an illusion. What kind of friend "squeezes" his friend, anyway?

I always pick my friends, especially when playing basketball.

Worst case scenario, your friends suck, you can dominate the offense, and your friends walk away thinking you're the best player they've ever seen.

Man, so true. My coworkers give me so much props cause i'm good, or is it that they suck.

If the competition is real good, I don't play with them at the first game. I try to establish myself as a good player, or atleast show that I have good abilities. And then later, I try to bring my friends in and carry them.

I pretty much pick my friends first. I'm ultra-competitive, but...who cares? It's a pickup game.

I have this problem at the 24

I generally pick up the 1st 3 people that ask me
    Sometimes
I want to stay on the court for more than one game
and want to get the best of the best of the best
    but
those guys get picked up almost every game
    or they win

IMO it really ain't fair to the non athletic guys
    so I say . . let's play
    let's have some fun
    let's break a sweat
cause it is only about exercise

At this Church that I play at, or atleast, I used to play it, they had this pretty good rule about how often you can play.

Usually, they play four on four, full court because the size of the court is about the size of a volleyball court and a half. Usually, about 10-12 to 14 people show up, and what they do is the most consecutive games you can play is twice. So if you lose, you still might play. It keeps it fair.
