I will be moving in a couple weeks, and am considering switching from SBC to Time Warner for phone and internet service.

Anyone got any opinions? I already know about the resolution of the Enhanced 911 issue, and also that Time Warner doesn't support three way calling.

If you get SBC with NOTHING else, exclude long distance, second line, and all that crap, you can get one line for 18 bucks.

Do you TRULY need all those features? We at the SwoLy household don't use them. Who nowadays that's not a teenager really uses three-way anyway?

The features I use at present are voice mail, call waiting, and caller ID. I expect to keep those features either way I go. I don't use three-way calling at home, so that particular lack is not an issue.

I forgot to add that we've had the number for a long time and also that I use SBC DSL, so we NEED the home phone. Else, we'd get rid of it. We have cell phones now... friends and family who want to call me and my SwoLy family know how to find us.

Do you REALLY need home phone service, either way?

Well, I work for SBC, and I can tell you that if you get a bundle w/ DSL, Dish Network, and phone - you will get hooked up for ~$70. And sometime late 2005/early2006 IPTV will be rolling out. I can tell you right now, that you are gonna want IPTV. It rocks!

What will IPTV do that digital cable does not, other than
    multiple picture-in-picture?

That wouldnt be a bad deal if SBC DSL wasn't such crap. For people that have had both, I've never met anyone that preferred SBC DSL over cable for broadband. I've had both and it's not even close.

On the flipside, I have SBC for phone. I have some friends with their phone service through TimeWarner, and they have constant problems.

    I have:
    Phone - SBC
    Sattelite - DirecTV
    Broadband - Timewarner (Earthlink)

Take a gander at this link

One thing that they do not mention is how they planon using the DVR. From what I hear, you can share recorded shows with other IPTV customers. It will work like the Yahoo briefcase.

It's still a work in progress, so more details will emerge.

Yep, i can attest to this.

for phone service, SBC is the way to go. with TW, i've constantly had to reset teh phone b/c i would not get a dial tone. it's freaking annoying. plus, if you're electricity goes out, phone is out also.

for broadband, Cable is 2,000 times better. i've called SBC support so many times, i remember what numbers to push before i've even been given the options.

Does Time Warner phone service still get a thumbs down from those of you who have tried it? They called me today...the service is finally available in my area.

I'm thinking about switching from DirecTv, DSL, LAN phone and Alarm all to Time Warner (Cable/DVR, IP Phone, Broadband, Alarm monitoring).. anyone have all these services from Time Warner? Is it a good discount getting all of them, or do they do the same "jack up the price" thing after 6 months with them??

The sad thing is I want to do it because of price, but I cant live without my DirecTv TIVO.. these things rock soooo much, it's hard to make the switch to that crap T/W calls a DVR.. :(

For $15/month, I get maximum features plus 200 could-be-LD minutes. I use VoIP provider http://www.voicepulse.com/.

BTW I was a loyal SBC cusotmer until I moved in October. I proceeded to get bill after bill with SBC DSL Internet charges, which I did not order or have. I wasted 30 minutes a month f*cking with SBC customer service, getting to take back the DSL charges. Each month, I was promised that the problem had been resolved, which clearly was not the case. (The problem was that the person who had my phone number before it was assigned to me had DSL. When they cancelled their service, DSL remained attached to the phone number.)

I just got my last bill from SBC for $280. What do you know but I got charged for early termination of my DSL services. What I should have got was a check back for chump change. I wasted thirty minutes of my life this morning taking to the dipsh*ts at SBC customer service. They promised that they did indeed owe me money and that the next letter I got from them would contain said chump change check. I told the customer service rep that I thought she was dellusional. I fully expect to get another SBC bill in the mail, with late charges no doubt.

    The new AT&T indeed.

the problem with this, (as I just spoke to a rep and would even be able to do the higher speed fiber service) is that to get this price you have to give up alot of what you get with twc. For instance, no unlimited long distance, you have to go low end dsl, you have to go america's top 60 and lose some channels plus you have around 30 dollars worth of taxes added in.

It may make sense after your promotional $99.00 bundle package ends with TWC, but if you have anything additional or try and make the packages even out, you end up paying around the same amount of money.
