So, last night, I was watching a video on my phone, and all of a sudden my speaker went out. I've tried everything I can think of to get it working again, to no avail. I have an old HTC Hero (Sprint), and my contract is due up in April. I think if I call them and do it right, I can get an upgrade. The problem is, I'm not the head of the plan. My father-in-law is, and he lives about fifty miles away. He doesn't know a ton about phones, and I think he thinks that if I upgrade, he has to also. I don't think that's the case usually.

    My predicament:

Should I shell out the money for a new phone now (I'm thinking the Galaxy S II for 200), should I try and have my phone repaired and wait to see if there is a better phone out then (Nexus Prime on Sprint?), or should I try and buy a phone off craigslist or something that will tide me over for like a year until there are some crazy awesome phones out(not a huge fan of this)?

Anyone have the S II? How is it?

SII is the best phone on Sprint right now; it'll probably be 4-6 months before the Galaxy Nexus makes it over. You could always get the Nexus S as it'll be upgraded to ICS. It's now a free phone on Sprint so pretty sure it'll be cheap for an upgrader.

If I get a new phone and choose that option, I think I'm set on the SII. Seems like exactly what I need. The ICS upgrade makes it nice, too.

sometimes dust in the earphone will make it think the headphones are in there, and cause it not to play out of speakers. On some phones. This happened to me, and I fixed it by carefully removing a little microdustbunny from it with a toothpick.

Try taking it to a Sprint store that has a repair technician.
My step son cracked the screen on his phone..we took it in...they replaced the screen in 45 minutes.

Yup. When I had Sprint, they offer this at certain corporate stores. It's worth a shot. Phones that are EOL (End Of Life) and have problems usually result in Sprint giving you a better phone anyways . lol

This. Also, might want to try blowing into the headphone jack with some compressed air. I had a similar problem with an old PDA(faulty switch inside the headphone jack) and this would work more often than not. Sometimes, I could just plugin and unplug headphones quickly several times, and that did the trick. Others, I did have to just poke around inside the headphone jack with a toothpick to manually jar the switch loose (bear in mind, I only experienced this problem once or twice a year). Might get you back up and running and last until April.

If it's a recurrent problem, though, you're best off biting the bullet and getting the new phone.

Buy a used HERO off craigslist to use in the mean time.

So, I went into the Sprint store, where I was told by two people that I could upgrade. When I told them that yes, I would upgrade, they took the battery out of my phone and set it aside. I pick out the SII, a case, and some screen protectors, after getting the whole contents of the store from the sales guy(trying to earn commission, whatever).

Long story short....after being called by a name other than my own about three times (I had already told him my name twice...he kept calling me the name of a different person on our policy), he started to ring me out. He asked me to double check my number. He had put the sale in under the wrong number(without charging me yet). I told him my number two or three times already at this point. Lo and Behold, after this discrepancy, it was that number, and not mine, that was eligible for the upgrade. I was/am PISSED.

So, apparently, only random lines are eligible to upgrade before their two years. Because mine wasn't, I had to pay 37 bucks to get a new (refurbished) crappy phone that I already had. If this one s***s the bed again, I pay another 37, until I can renew in April. Sprint might actually be losing me, though. I haven't decided. Why in the world will they not let me upgrade 3 months before I'm due to end my contract? Why did they tell me I was able to? Why do I have to pay 37 dollars for a holdover phone that is only going to (hopefully) last me 3 months, only to turn around and fork over another 200 for a new phone?

So, I'm stuck unable to make phone calls until about 5:30 tomorrow night. I got screwed over by Sprint. Their horrible customer service strikes again. I'm going to file a complaint against this kid that cared nothing about helping me, and was obviously interested in his bank.

    F**k Sprint.
