I've pretty much outgrew my T-Mobile sidekick and it pales in comparison against other handhelds. It's overrated, IMO. I would get so much in return if I got a Blackberry or G1 phone. I've stuck with sidekicks because they offer a data only plan which means I don't have to pay for minutes if I don't need them. I'm not sure if T-mobile offers that for Blackberry or G1. Anyway, I just want a new phone and I can't decide on a Blackberry Curve or G1 phone. Do you have a Blackberry Curve (any blackberry would be good) or G1 phone? Why do you like it? TIA!
I just decided to get a curve. Every review I read regarding the G1 recommended waiting for the next model.
My wife has a Blackberry 8130 (I think it's a Pearl). The main complaint we have is that there is an additional "Blackberry" charge via Sprint. I don't know if this is via other service plans as well, but she'll probably get a new phone so we can get rid of that charge.
There is a $20 charge for internet access on any T Mobile phone. It isn't a "Blackberry" charge. I'm fine with my Pearl. Internet is adequate for googling something, but it isn't good for browsing the web. Blackberry is superior in email access. G1 is superior for internet access.
Is that not just the data plan charge which you would have with any phone? You have a Blackberry so I would assume you would still want to be able to have internet access and email on your new phone.
On my Sprint account, we have unlimited data access on our plan. In addition, there is an added charge for the "Blackberry Pack". If we switched out phones (e.g. a Rant for the Blackberry), our bill would decrease by the amount of the "Blackberry Pack".
Our Sprint plan includes 2100 minutes, unlimited data and umlimited texting for X dollars. There is a separate Blackberry fee (Y) and there is also a separate Palm fee (if we had a Palm). Our total monthly fee is X + Y. Replacing the Blackberry with a Rant (for example) would cause our bill to be X. I am simply pointing out that Lady_Di should check to see if her plan may include a fee for the Curve or any Blackberry device.
I'd call Sprint and have them remove the blackberry pack, my wife and I both have the Pearl and had to sign up for the blackberry plan when we bought the phones so we could get the mail in rebates.. After the rebate checks came I called and removed the blackberry plans on both our phones, ours were $30.00 a month for each phone.. Now we don't have any data package on them which is fine with us, because we use them mainly as a PDA to sync them with Outlook everyday and we liked the size of the phones.. OP- We really like the Pearls, I was really big into windows phones before and the Blackberry IMO makes for a much better phone..
Lady Di, No suggestions, but a stupid question: Does your carrier make you pay for voice service, or can you get a Text/Internet/Email-only plan?
That's what I meant by Data plan (text, internet, and e-mail only). That's what I have with my sidekick. That's why I've been with this device because I think it is only phone that offers that. I don't want to pay $$ for 100 minutes because I'm not even going to use them. I'd have to check with T-mobile if they offer a data only plan for Blackberry or G1.
I found this link that compares three phones. It's pretty helpful. I don't want a IPhone because I don't like typing on a touch screen. I'm still undecided, though. I gotta figure out which email or browsing is more important to me. http://www.crn.com/hardware/210800755;jsessionid=ZAI2IEUOINFDAQSNDLPSKHSCJUNN2JVN?pgno=1
I've had quite a few PDA phones (HTC, Blackberry, Windows Mobile, iPhone) and nothing has come close to my iPhone. I refused to use one for the longest time but once I got it, I was seriously impressed. I also liked having the keyboard but the iPhone touch keyboard is really good. You should at the very least give it a try.
Being a T-Mobile customer, wait for the new Curve 8900, great reviews, and looks very good. http://gizmodo.com/5071533/blackberry-curve-8900-first-impressions-kills-the-original A successor to the andriod line is already in the works. I wouldn't buy piece of tech that's 1-2 generations behind.
G1 is the best phone I have had so far. I love the slide out keyboard. Makes texting and browsing the internet just like a laptop. I wasn't impressed by its looks until I actually saw it in person. Built very well and feels nice in my hands. I can't forget the Andriod Market which is growing and getting better by the day. The paid apps, which are yet to come, will blow peoples minds. Also, the next update which is due early next month will fix numerous bugs, add a on-screen keyboard and video recorder. I have the G1 Data plan which is "unlimited" 3G and 400 TXT for $25 a month. You can get unlimited txt for $35.
I've always used Blackberry and I would put it third behind the iphone (my wife has one) and G1 (haven't tried but heard such good things). The only reason I don't have an iphone is because the IT guys here are so anti anything but blackberry's. When the next generation of iphone comes out, though, I will convince them to let me switch.
If you want more internet access and better experience surfing the web, get a G1. If you want the best email service known to man then get a blackberry. I have a G1 and it really is a glorified sidekick. It is still early for Android and I definitely see a lot of potential with it. The actual hardware of the G1 isn't so great in my mind. Just doesn't seem as well built as blackberries are. If you use the internet to do some quick searches on google or read some articles, stick with the blackberry. It will allow you to do the basic internet surfing but provide you with an untouchable email service. If you really need to be surfing a lot on your phone, then go with the G1. The keyboard on the G1 isn't that great either. Keyboards on blackberry's are far superior.
