blah the link won't work - go to www.stltoday.com, it's one of the headlines No better way to make a name for yourself in radio... I guess
Man, that is just sick. I can't believe the radio station's management refuses to do anything about it.
Wanna tell the a-hole and his station what you think? morning DJ: Beau Duran beau@98kupd.com program director: JJ Jefries jj@98kupd.com Why does morning radio have to be so moronic? Bruno is okay with me, and I'll listen to news, but the rest of it is worse than static.
It was funny up until that part. "Why don't you call Randy Johnson and tell him he sucks. We beat him 12-2." I agree that the DJs should be fired. That, or widowed. Just kidding...they probably can't get women.
That is pathetic. In my mind they crossed so far over the line they should be fired and then taken out back and spend a few minutes with some of Kile`s closest friends, but it looks like the radio`s station management wont do squat........what a bunch of heartless morons
Below is the same story from the Arizona Republic, the main newspaper in Phoenix. The last two paragraphs are pretty repulsive. I don't know any "guys" that would do crap like this. ____________________ DJ's cruel prank on Kile's widow angers Cardinals By Jim Gintonio The Arizona Republic Oct. 4, 2002 No action will be taken against a disc jockey from KUPD-FM who called the widow of former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Darryl Kile at her Phoenix hotel room and asked if she had a date for Thursday's game against the Diamondbacks. Chuck Artigue, the market manager for the Sandusky Group, which owns six radio stations in the Phoenix market, said the call to Flynn Kile "was in terribly bad taste" but that no disciplinary action was planned against Beau Duran. Artigue said he talked to both Major League Baseball and Diamondbacks President Rich Dozer and apologized. "It was out of line," Dozer said Thursday. "He should not have said what he said. . . . I was mortified." According to Artigue, Duran has a problem "understanding good taste from bad." Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said after the game that he was livid about the call, saying it was "so cruel." "I'm vehement in saying that whoever is responsible should suffer serious and dire consequences," he said. "If we (the Cardinals) could get our hands on them, we would deal with them physically. It was so brutal that something should happen to them. I hope whoever was responsible gets nailed." Artigue said Duran told Flynn Kile that " . . . we saw you on TV the other night, and you're very attractive. You're hot. Are you going to the game today?" When Kile said she would be there, Duran said, "Do you have a date?" After saying goodbye, Flynn Kile hung up, Artigue said. Darryl Kile died unexpectedly on June 22 in Chicago. Artigue said the morning crew's action was "guys being guys, but terribly bad taste in my opinion." Asked about possible consequences to Duran, Artigue said, "In all honesty, if I put people on suspension or fired them . . . there's a thousand things that morning shows do on a monthly basis that are far more concerning."
holy crap, what an a-hole! thanks for the e-mail addresses B-Bob... That DJ and station manager will be receiving an angry email from me.
This may also violate FCC rules if she wasn't specifically told she was on air. http://www.fcc.gov/eb/broadcast/telphon.html You can also email the FCC with a complaint at: mailto://fccinfo@fcc.gov
I didn't know that was an FCC violation to be on the air and not be aware of it. What happens to all the radioshows that call people on the air and mess with them just to say happy birthday afterwards? Can they be sued then?
Just speculating here, but all those scams are pre-recorded. I would think that the scamee is asked permission after the scam but before it is aired.
I'm even more disgusted that the radio station hasn't just summarily dismissed these low-lifes. I've already sent my email of complaint.
from the radio station's website: We would like to extend a most sincere apology to everyone who was offended by an error in judgment, which was not intended to be hurtful or malicious in any way. This was not intended to be a ratings stunt nor was it pre-meditated. We are truly amazed on how this turned into a media circus and we deeply regret the turmoil that it caused people all over the country. Beau Duran would like to personally apologize to the follwoing for the unnecessary grief that this media mishap created; Flynn Kile and her family, Tony LaRussa and the entire St. Louis Cardinals baseball organization, Major League Baseball, and the people of St. Louis and Phoenix, and all listeners of 98 KUPD. what corporate crap! if the dj is really sorry, why doesn't he make his own personal statement? they were surprised by the media circus? what do you expect when you broadcast immature and hurtful pranks?
Thanks, dragp. I feel so much better knowing it wasn't a rating stunt. They simply wanted to harrass a newly widowed woman. We should make that DJ try to jump the Great Wall on a BMX bicycle!
This whole thing is completely disgusting. I can't believe the radio station refuses to admit the difference between this incident and your run of the mill shock jock material.
