What the hell was he smoking yesterday? Pulled out the driver on the 18th, when all he needed was a bogey to win the US Open. He sliced the sh*t out of it, knocked it off the clubhouse, then proceeded to hit the next ball all of 5 yards off a tree. His third shot landed in the bunker, and it took him 2 putts to get to a double bogey. Why on earth didn't he just pull out a 3-iron or a 4-wood in that situation? Did his caddy not say anything to him about how narrow the fairway was on the 18th? Can't believe he'd be so arrogant in that situation. At least he gets to go home to his ridiculously hot wife. My favorite was seeing Ogilvy in the clubhouse watching Mick and Montgomerie on the 17th and 18th. He watched in amazement as he went from hoping for a playoff to winning the damn tournament.
Actually he needed a par to ensure a win. A bogey would have put him in a playoff. That being said, he still made bad decisions.
Mickelson wasn't on yesteday. His shots off the tee sucked. He hit only 2 fairways yesterday off the tee. He saved himself numerous times with his creativity but ran out of luck on the 18th. Monty too had been hitting approach shots short all day and again came up short on the 18th. Harrington bogeyed the last three holes and Furyk triple bogey 15 I think and then bogeyed the 18th. Ogilvy's chip in on the 17th turned out to be a championship winning shot. He simpled survived the course better then the rest. Winged Foot is a really hard course. Irwin won the U.S. Open there with a +7 back in the 1970's.
what a choke and what an anti-climactic ending. i was in the grand stand on the 18th hole and people were screaming and hollering everytime they changed the leaderboard, showing that mickelson, ogilvy, montgomerie, furyk and harrington might all tie and force an 18 hole playoff. this meant not going to work the next day and people were cheering against mickelson when he went two strokes up because they wanted the playoff. when the knucklehead doubled the 18th, the crowd was in numbed shock. nothing against ogilvy, but people probably would have rather phil won outright than to witness what transpired.
I don't understand the fanatical admiration that most golf fans have for Mickelson. Is it just anti-tiger backlash? I can't figure out why he's that appealing, he just seems like a common dufus, but maybe that's his appeal? It's interesting to hear people cheering against him, I thought on TV he was the super-fan favorite.
That's awesome. I was wondering what the crowd's reaction would be to that charade on the final few holes. I'm sure Ogilvy didn't mean to win it like this, but he'll take it. I might be inclined to play the entire Winged Foot course with nothing but a 7-iron, PW, and putter after what I saw this weekend.
well, he probably has more pure talent than anyone in the game, including tiger, yet he goes for broke more often than he should- OBVIOUSLY. there is something flawed about him (and he's goofy) whereas tiger seems to be "the perfect golfing specimen." so yeah, i think some of it is also anti-tiger sentiment. people were rooting more for a playoff than against mickelson, and in the end he was still easily the most popular golfer our there. on a side note, i also went to the open on friday and watched tiger for a few holes. now this is just a gut feeling, but, that dude is roided out.
That is a HUGE part of it. I have never liked him as for some reason, he just rubs me the wrong way. So, I was very happy to see him choke yesterday.
Philly Mick is the whitest man in major sports, the goody two shoes nerd that wins class president, but he does play great golf. Any pro will tell you, and just ask Van de Velde, they are never going to lay up to try and win. They are pros, they can hit the shot. He just got a little off in his timing, his hips got ahead of his shoulders, that fanned open the face and away it went. From that point you are fighting against the USGA and their sadistic agronomist. A lot of golf is about crushing failure and the breaks the course gives you, good and bad, but I don't even know why I watch the US Open. It's just brutal.
Mickelson was around a good while before Tiger ever came upon the scene. He's a genuinely nice guy who wins and loses with grace. What's not to like?
My wife's only comment of the whole afternoon of being forced to watch hours of golf, "That guy (Figjam) has man boobs".
I think the reason people root for Phil now is because he used to do what we saw almost every major tournament. People wanted him to win after choking so many times that he became a huge favorite. Now that he's broken through, add all of those fans with bandwagoners...and you have quite a large following. Also, I think his bologna t*** appeal to the 40-50 year olds sitting on their couch at home that have the same physique.
