Senate committee: Bush knew Iraq statements were untrue

WASHINGTON— A long-awaited Senate Select Intelligence Committee report made public Thursday concludes that President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney made public statements to promote an invasion of Iraq that they knew at the time were not supported by available intelligence.

A companion report found that a special office set up by then Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld undertook "sensitive intelligence activities" that were inappropriate "without the knowledge of the Intelligence Community or the State Department."

“Before taking the country to war, this administration owed it to the American people to give them a 100 percent accurate picture of the threat we faced. Unfortunately, our Committee has concluded that the administration made significant claims that were not supported by the intelligence,” said committee Chairman John D. Rockefeller IV, D- W. Va. It's long been known that the administration's claims in the runup to the Iraq war, from Saddam Hussein's alleged ties to al Qaida to whether Iraq had an active nuclear weapons program, were incorrect. But the Senate report is the first official examination of whether the president and vice president knew that their claims were incorrect at the time they made them.

“There is no question we all relied on flawed intelligence. But, there is a fundamental difference between relying on incorrect intelligence and deliberately painting a picture to the American people that you know is not fully accurate," Rockefeller said in a statement.

    Among the reports conclusions:

Claims by President Bush that Iraq and al Qaida had a partnership "were not substantiated by the intelligence."

The president and vice president misrepresented what was known about Iraq’s chemical weapons capabiliies.

Rumsfeld misrepresented what the intelligence community knew when he said Iraq's weapons productions facilities were buried deeply underground.

Cheney's claim that the intelligence community had confirmed that lead Sept. 11 hijacker Mohammed Atta had met an Iraqi intelligence officer in Prague in 2001 was not true.

Here are the key points from the reports, according to a press release from Sen. Jay Rockefeller's office:

mark, "why shouldn’t cc.net denizens infer that winning the war may be less important to you than scoring political points?"

yes because the war was so unpopular when it was started. all the people against were trying to score political points.

anyone used to watch "A Pup Named Scooby Doo" and every episode the young freddie would accuse another kid named "red herring"

apparently now posting actual info is something that bothers you as opposed to your right wing blogs. LOLOLOL

basso, here's the reality: We're in a war we can't win no matter how many battles we win. We were intentionally brought into this war for God knows what reason... I used to think it was pure domestic politics... and that sure played a part, but more and more it's looking like Bush just wanted to blow some things up and didn't give a damn about the consequences.

The actions of this administration have placed the US in a huge hole in terms of everything from military preparedness to budget to international standing to our own American values. The whole purpose of a report like this, late though it may be and as watered down as it is, is to make it clear to future generations that the capacity for something like this is always there and they should never allow this to happen again.

Come on, when your government does something like the Iraq War, don't you want to know about it? Don't you want your kids to know about it?

i'm pretty well informed about it, and my kids will be too as they become old enough to understand. there is nothing new in this report, just re-posturing of old, tired political positions.

i made you an offer in another thread- you never responded?

You never responded to any of the people who did respond to your offer. Instead you ignored the responses.

I hope this is not offensive, but I sincerely can't believe how relatively non-existant the outrage has been over this.

This is a HUGE deal. HUMONGOUS. People of all nationalities died because of this. LOTS of them.

The country was shoved further towards recession because of this.

The dollar is bleeding because of this.

The lack of outrage blows me away. George Bush killed more Iraqis than Saddam Hussein. He has killed (if I'm not mistaken) more Americans than Al Qaeda did on 9/11.

How the HELL is this so contained?

No thanks. I know of the book. I also looked at the author's web site and he doesn't seem as impartial there as you make him out to be here.

Look, nobody is disputing the actions of our troops. We know they are doing amazing things. We also know they've unfortunately been put in a situation where they have to do amazing things.

From what I can tell, the book doesn't address the larger strategic issues beyond the caricatures in your original post.

Put another way, this book may very well be a good book for what it is, but it will end up on the Military History shelf of Barnes and Noble, not the U.S. History shelf.

People who were paying attention already knew this. The only thing new is some of the details. It's too late to do anything about it except to make sure there's a full accounting and it never happens again.

If it's any consolation, I wouldn't be surprised if Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, etc. will find it difficult traveling outside the US.
