As I sit here depressed about Deke, I remember him saying how he wanted to retire as a Rocket and see his number up in the rafters one day next to Hakeem and Clyde. Since Deke says his career is over, I created a petition to start the process going just in case there is anyone out there who doesn't think his jersey should be up there. If you agree, sign the petition!! http://www.gopetition.com/online/27161.html
While I am not even sure that the logistics of this are even possible, it would definitely be one of those special moments that could define a playoff run. Can you imagine the emotion that would run through the team and the crowd to see an all-time legend (on AND off the court), someone who was on the active roster just a few days prior, get his number retired before a playoff game? I'm in.
I would hope the Rockets could influence him to become an Asst. Coach if he does decide to retire. And ultimately we can help him get a ring as a Coach. I cant imagine this team with out Deke. Hell, start a petition to hang the '#2 Shot Blocker Sign' right under the Hakeem #1 sign. Btw, where is that sign in the TC?!?!?
I love Deke to death......but we already have one jersey up their that doesn't deserve to be. Retiring a jersey is so overplayed in sports today. 50 years from now there aren't gonna be any numbers left. Deke is a HOFer. First ballot. No doubt. I really hope he gets a ring this year. But he's not an all time Rocket. There's only 4 guys that deserve that honor.
Mutombo is a great man. His number should be retired league wide. He should also be given an honorary 1994 NBA Championship ring for his part in taking out Seattle for us.
what i want to see next game is whenever Houston gets a block, the whole crowd honors Deke with his famous finger wag.
#55 should be up in Toyota Center. So many times he gave us joy,surprise,courage.........He is a hero in Houston..He deserve it .. Plz do it
the NBA should retire deke's #. the charity efforts that deke has done during his tenure in the NBA has been beyond words. the way he has carried himself as a professional on and off the court. if not, i wish stern would give him a lifetime achievement award or something like that for his philanthropy.
