Damn I am tired of this guy. He has no intention of playing Chuck Hayes even if the situation calls for it. The only reason he got in the game last night is because of foul trouble and Mutombo going down. I mean wtf is he doing playing Mutombo in a playoff game in the first place? The guy was an insurance policy INCASE Yao goes down and you have to play big's like Tim Duncan. You don't throw him out there with young athletes like Aldridge and Outlaw. You have arguably the most difficult to guard big man in the NBA and he rarely gets the ball. You put Hayes on Aldridge and force feed Yao. THAT is how you win playoff games. PLAY THE ****ING CHUCK WAGON...
agreed. the fact we had one game success to use Scola on Aldridge doesn't mean that Luis can do that constantly, Hayes proved he can do decent job on Aldridge all season long. Aldmen just need to switch back to Hayes quickly when **** happen.
I guess you didn't see Aldridge scoring all his points on jumpers. How does putting a SHORTER defender on him prevent that? How does letting Aldridge relax on defense solve anything? How does that help Yao get the ball when no one has to worry about guarding Hayes? Nice sig, lol.
we got in so we would have someone in the playoffs, when the games are harder, the defense must be stronger, and yao will be more fatigued...dont blame this injury on adelman, it was an unfortunate situation, and his assessment of the situation is on cue, we're used to a certain rotation with our pfs, if we put in hayes more landrys minutes could reduce, his production could suffer, hurting our team overall, it is not an easy decision
I disagree completely. Chuck would play more, if he didn't suck so much this season. He has become such a liability on offense - without Tracy, he now seems incapable of making a layup, even though he still gets open ones...PLUS, to make it worse, it seems like he is actually looking for his shot these days - that his defensive efficiency doesn't make up for it. And his defensive efficiency isn't that good anymore either. He fouls way too much these days, he has more rebounds poked out of his hands, etc. Chicken or the egg? Has Chuck gotten worse because Adelman plays him less or does Adelman play him less because he's gotten worse? Plus, if you're going to compare stats under JVG and Rick, it is probably also fair to point out: JVG = Playing for Contract Adelman = Has Contract
^ I think your chicken or egg question is inherently wrong: i think the problem has more to do with Adelman's system vs. Van Gundy's system. However, I do agree with your assertion that perhaps he played much better when he was playing for a contract (as do most players). If anything, Hayes' offensive inefficiencies have been more exposed under RA b/c it is the nature of the system. Under Van Gundy, he didn't have to do anything concerning offense, so he could focus on defense and boards. It is no secret that RA is avoiding playing Hayes as much as possible, and it has everything to do with how Hayes does not fit into the system. All of this does not change the basic fact that Scola's/Landry's offensive production - defensive liability is not worth more than Chuck Hayes' defensive prowess (on Aldridge) - Offensive black hole. I'll gladly take a greatly reduced offensive output from Aldridge any day; make Roy beat us every game
It's a moot point, but Mutombo blocks shots and doesn't give up offensive boards, Chuck Hayes doesn't box out and tries to take a lame charge every time (and occasionally succeeds, but it's still not good D). Last night, Aldridge was on fire and would have scored on anyone. Scola's man-to-man D is often pathetic but he did about the best job possible.
kinda agree, but theres a loop hole in that, thats is they going to double yao more, since hayes offensive is like you know what...
I agree with the OP, but it should depend on how the game is going. If Aldridge starts going wild and Scola isn't doing much offensively then go to Hayes early. Aldridge appears to be very streaky, and some games he's just not going to have it, so you don't need to worry about forcing the issue with him on defense. I'd say they just need to monitor it, and adjust accordingly. Yes, Aldridge is an outside shooter, but Hayes is harder to shake and bodies up so well it gets a lot of shooters off balance leading to misses. Aldridge made some extremely difficult shots on Hayes yesterday, but I don't think he can do it consistently.
Or could it be that JVG had Chuck and JHo and nobody else and Adelman has had Scola and Landry? No, that can't be it... Oh, and Chuck had 3 fouls in 13 minutes last night.
How is making a 7 footer take contested jump shots a bad thing? The guy made his shots last night but they were tough shots. It happens. In case you have not noticed Chuck's height has not been an issue when guarding big players. Aldridge just got hot. And your point about Chuck not having offense is a moot point when Scola and Landry can't score buckets either. At least with Chuck you know what you have defensively. Scola and Landry's defense disappears when they are not scoring on the other side of the court. I'd rather take the guy who isn't scoring but can defend as opposed to the guy who isn't scoring or defending well on that particular night.
Hayes is now a key player in this series and as far as we go in the playoffs. I disagree with the OP questioning the use of Deke in this series though. It made perfect sense to use him when you are facing a team bringing in a true 7' C off the bench. It was an unfortunte injury and we are now left facing a serious dilemma. We have no backup C for the rest of a series where the opponent has 4 guys that are 6'11 and above. Many people predicted rebounding would be a key point to this series, specifically our defensive rebounding and keeping the Blazers from grabbing offensive boards and getting second chance points. The Blazers were the best team in the NBA in offensive rebounding during the regular season. Deke was our BEST REBOUNDER, even if he only played limited minutes. He also protected the paint better than anybody else on the team, even if he only played limited minutes. I don't know how much of that void Chuck will be able to fill, but we are facing an incredible frontcourt challenge for the remainder of this series and the rest of the playoffs. We have no backup C now so when Yao rests, or gets in foul trouble, it will be a monumental task to consistently keep the Blazers off the offensive glass. We can expect them to try to take full advantage of their athleticism and length throughout the remainder of this series. They will be crashing the offensive boards HARD from almost every position. They will be taking the ball to the rim with reckless abandon, hoping to get Yao in foul trouble even more than they were doing up until the time Deke went down. When Yao got in foul trouble or needed a rest, Deke was an outstanding replacement, especially in this series, because the Blazers don't have an extremely mobile C that can spread the floor and stretch the defense. Losing Deke may be even costlier than some people imagine. Hayes is one of the best defensive players in the game but I don't know if he can give us what Deke did given his tremendous size disadvantage. Scola will get eaten alive if we play him at C for extended minutes.
Chuck fills a void in non obvious ways... one of our problems it ball movement and getting it to the right place... hayes is magic when it comes to this... also his defense is good. I think it's going to fall upon the entire team stepping up and Hayes moving the ball, making good defensive decisions and drawing some good foul points for us.
