Perry wants to be Your Vice President With the rumors surrounding Perry, this is a match made in Heaven link AUSTIN — Gov. Rick Perry this morning endorsed former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani for president, saying on Fox News that he would campaign for the man he believes is best-suited to lead America during "probably one of the most important times in our history with a war on terror going on." "For the last six months, I have cogitated, I've looked, I've studied these candidates — some of them I know very well — and came to the conclusion that the individual who can lead America with clarity, the individual who has the experience, the individual who cleaned up a city that was absolutely on its back is mayor Rudy Giuliani," Perry said. "I'm proudly and excitedly going to campaign for him and work for him," Perry said, appearing on Fox & Friends for what was touted by the news channel as a "humongous Texas-sized announcement." Perry, who promotes his record as a conservative, made a reference to a difference in views on some issues with Giuliani, who has backed the right to abortion and gay rights. Perry has supported abortion restrictions — including a requirement for girls to get parental consent for abortion — and a constitutional ban on gay marriage in Texas. In a recent speech to California Republicans, Perry touted that record and said the GOP must stay true to its conservative values. "We spent an inordinate amount of time together over the course of the last six weeks talking about issues, both on the phone and face to face," Perry said of Giuliani. "I looked him in the eye and I asked him questions on some issues that we don't agree on." But Perry, in a phrase he often uses, said, "I don't get tied up with the process. What I look for is results." Citing his work cleaning up New York City, the GOP governor said Giuliani "is the individual who will give us the results that will make America safer, that will move our economy forward, that will put strict constructionists on the Supreme Court " Perry's decision drew a strong response from a fellow state GOP officeholder, Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson, whose presidential pick is actor and former U.S. Sen. Fred Thompson. "I'm confused,'' Patterson said by email. "One of the most, if not the most conservative governor in Texas history endorses a pro choice, rabidly anti-2nd amendment former NY mayor What happened to conservative principles as the first measure of who to support for any office?" Some have suggested Perry may be a possible contender for vice president, with his appeal to conservatives especially important if a candidate such as Giuliani is the nominee. Others scoff at that idea, noting the presence of President Bush — the previous Texas governor — will make it difficult for the GOP to put another Texan on the ticket. Asked about that on Fox, Perry said with a chuckle, "I've got the best job in the world. Ask the president." When pressed, he said, "I have no interest in going to Washington, D.C. It's not a place that I have passion about. I've got three-plus years left in my term as the governor of a great state, whose economy is doing quite well, and intend to do that and finish out that term."
How do these guys keep getting elected in Texas? I heard a rumor yesterday the Kay Bailey Hutchison is considering giving up her senate seat to run for gov. Weird
Hopefully Perry can quit the governship, run with Giuliani or whoever and then be defeated getting him out of our hair.
No...Perry is far, far worse. Bush actually got a few things done when he was governor. All Perry has accomplished is obliterating the tort system in Texas and, apparently, getting a haircut every so often.
Perry is one of the most unprincipled politicians ever. He courts and snuggles up to the most right-wing element of the Texas GOP and both conspire to let Kay Bailey Hutchison know she better not quit the U.S. Senate to run against him or they will play very dirty. Then during the campaign for governor, he snuggles even closer to them because pretty much nobody else (including many in the GOP) can stand the sight of him. Then AFTER he is re-elected, he dumps on the Texas right-wing by announcing his support for Rudy. Simply amazing! Perry rode Bush's (Governor) re-election wave when he first got elected Lt. Gov and then slid into the Governor's office when Bush went to Washington D.C. He got re-elected as described above and then dumps his "core" when he doesn't need them any more. What a worthless piece of garbage politician. As far as I'm concerned, he almost makes "Slick Willie" Clinton look like a man of integrity and character by comparison. That is nearly impossible but Rick Perry does it.
Christ....I sure as hell hope not. I want a moderate. A liberal republican or a conservative democrat. Guiliani has had my vote for some time now. Adding Perry to his ticket may have me voting for a third party. I really have no problem with Clinton other than health care. Hillary-care, and socialized health care in general, frightens me.
I agree. He has distorted one law so badly in Texas where the fines (re: proceeds) go to the the "General Fund." ie. Where politicians can spend it on whatever they like.
Giuliani & Perry ticket might force true conservatives to support a 3rd party candidate, guaranteeing a Dem victory.
