A thread I would expect from Basso. I understand why conservative ideologues and libertarians hate Pelosi. It is puzzling to see some moderates nutty about her.

Probably because she is nutty - and powerhungry. Even some Democrats aren't fans of her.

    Jim Cooper:

Well, I probably shouldn’t tell you this, but I actually got some quiet encouragement from the Obama folks for what I’m doing. They know its a messy bill and they wanted a clean bill.

Now, I got in terrible trouble with our leadership because they don’t care what’s in the bill, they just want it pass and they want it to be unanimous. They don’t mind the partisan fighting cause that’s what they are used to. In fact, they’re really good at it. And they’re a little bit worried about what a post-partisan future might look like.

If members actually had to read the bills and figure out whether they are any good or not. We’re just told how to vote. We’re treated like mushrooms most of the time.

She is just two heartbeats (albeit stopping at roughly the same time) away from being President.

I would be impressed. I don't think Sarah Palin can fathom numbers that large.

Pelosi made this same gaffe back in January in an interview with Chris Wallace.

    -------
PELOSI: Well, I believe that — I know that President-elect Obama is a strong supporter of America’s workers. I myself am a strong supporter of that legislation. We passed it with a strong vote in the House in the last Congress, and I continue to be supportive of it.

But in terms of what we have to do in the first 100 days, we must address the needs of this country. Five hundred million people will lose their jobs each month until we have an economic package.

    WALLACE: No, 500,000.

PELOSI: What did I say, million?

WALLACE: Yes, 500 million. That would really be a recession.

PELOSI: Oh, no. Excuse me. Thank you for correcting me.

    WALLACE: Yes.

PELOSI: It feels like 500 million. Five hundred thousand Americans will lose their jobs each month until we have a recovery package.

So if it can't help all of the people it shouldn't be allowed to help any? Or to help prevent additional layoffs?

We're going to do just as the Egyptians did when they had a large number unemployed and discontent. We're going to put them to work building valuable public works projects.

I'd be impressed if we could figure out how to build something that would survive for thousands of years in relatively good shape without needing yearly maintenance! :)

Remember the Pelosi poll that was done on this message board?

60% voted poor, while 2% said Great and 8% okay. That is worse approval than Bush. Maybe 2% of the message board live in SF and actually voted for her?

500,000 a month until a package is passed? Really? So if there isn't a stimulus package in a year, 6,000,000 jobs will be lost?

I find even that number hard to believe.

We averaged 500,000 per month over the last 4 months of 2008 (1.9 mill from Sept-Dec according to the link above with all the layoff numbers). I know we had several hundred thousand layoffs at major companies in January - so add all the smaller companies, and we're probably at that rate for 5 months now at least. I don't know if that's really sustainable, though.
