No chance I'm voting for McCain, but I'm not sure there's cause for this level of pessimism from Republican strategists. This is still a close race.

Just a couple of Republican pundits talking dejectedly about the campaign and Palin after the cameras stop rolling. They made it clear they're not holding out much hope for this one.

    Chuck todd blathers on camera...

    [indecipherable]

MM: umm you know because I come out of the blue swing state state governor work, Angler, Whitman, Tommy Thompson, Mitt Romney, Jeb Bush, I mean, these guys, this is how you want to catch this race, just run it up and, it's not going to work and...

    PN: It's over

MM: Still, McCain can give a version of the Lieberman speech to do himself some good.

    PN: That's different [?]

Male2: [might be CT]: The Palin pick is insulting to Kay Bailey Hutchison

    PN: Saw Kaye this morning

Male2: Yeah she's never gonna feel comfortable about this

    MM: All bummed out

Male2: I mean, is she really the most qualified woman they could have turned to?

PN: The most qualified, no. I think they went for this, excuse me, political bull**** about narratives

Male2: Yeah, they went to narrative

    PN: in the picture

    MM: I totally agree

PN: every time republicans do that because that's not where they live, and it's not what they're good at, they blow it

MM: You know what's really the worst thing about it? The greatness of McCain is no cyncisim and this is cynical,

Male2: This is cynical, and as you've called it gimmicky

    Thanks guys

If your speakers aren't working here are the best quotes.

Mike Murphy- "It's not gonna work", "This looks cynical"

Noonan- "Its over", "They're all bummed out", "Most qualified no. They went or this political bull**** about narratives"

Most Republican pundits are personally very different than the social conservatives that make up the party's base. Their reaction doesn't surprise me but all of these stories about Palin certainly aren't going to help McCain with independents and they're the ones that are going to decide this race.

If it is a couple years ago and you said Mccain would be the Republican candidate, I would have a real choice to make about who to vote for, but now Mccain is leaning over backward to please the rightwing base of Republican party, the choice is just as easy as it can be. He is no longer the Mccain that stand up for what he beleives in but just a tool for the rightwing block of his party now.

The inside-the-beltway Republican moderates represented by Noonan and her crowd badly wanted Romney for VP. (And for President.) There were 5 northeastern states that even put his name in nomination for VP. And that's pretty much completely out of touch with Southern and Western non-Mormon conservatives. Palin's record may be short, but it exactly matches her rhetoric. Romney's campaign rhetoric is 180 degrees from his record.

That's kind of what I've been saying. McCain 2000 > McCain 2008. I do wish that McCain would have won the nomination over Bush in 2000. He started "playing ball" with the rest of the Republican party sometime in the last 8 years. In my opinion, he knew that because of his age, 2008 would be his last chance to run for president and I think he made some compromises, moving politically closer to the conservative base of the party, in an effort to secure the nomination. He's not the "maverick" he once was. He went from being a true moderate Republican to being one of the most conservative members of the senate. McCain would be doing better right now if he was still the 2000 version of himself.

Absolutely. I had a great amount of sympathy for McCain after the "black baby" fiasco. I thought McCain would be no ally to George Bush and hate him forever after that campaign, but I was exactly wrong. He went along with everything Bush and Cheney dreamed up without a word and he made campaign appearances on behalf of Bush in 2004. I honestly couldn't believe it, but I guess he got what he wanted in the end. It just saddened me to see a Republican that I respected eat so much **** with a smile to get the nomination. I liked McCain the outlaw much better than McCain the insider.

You sure about that? She's anti-pork, but Alaska got the most pork in the nation last year and she aggressively sought pork as mayor (including hiring Abramhof-connected lobbyists) with over $10MM in pork for a town of 7000 people. She also was strongly for the bring-to-nowhere while running for governor.

    She's a tax-cutter that raised taxes.

She's a reformer that's in the middle of a scandal about potentially abusing power, encouraged an investigation that she's now refusing to cooperate with, and many people from her town believe she was politically vindictive as mayor.

Her rhetoric on social issues hasn't really been tested as far as I know.

These people obviously don't know how much America loves a victim. All these attacks will hurt the Democrats. Just look at Clinton's numbers during the Lewinsky scandal. Being "qualified" doesn't matter to voters. McCain is getting free pub and no one is talking about Obama right now.

Then again, they can't attack Obama because they are trying to cover there own missteps.

Dude, the fact that you're saying this about a Republican is SO FREAKING FUNNY it actually hurts
LOL - McCain is stuck playing defense when this is his week to play offense. That's like saying "The Swift Boat lies will help Kerry as long as he's in th news!"
