why not sign him? All he is asking for is 5 million.. And honestly I think he could be our number 4, maybe even number 3.
We have Roy O a clear number 1. Wandy is not a number 2. Backe is not even a number 3. I feel that we have Roy O and a couple 3's and 4's. Have you seen Hampton's stats lately ? You don't think his **** will get hit to the tracks? Good grief. Astros will be 84-78 at best. Not to mention we close @ phil and @ NYM
$5M may not seem like much by baseball standards but that still is a hefty price tag for a starter that can no longer go past five innings.
I have no idea how the Astros will perform this season. But there's not a lot of recent history to suggest that anyone should be scared of playing the Mets in late-September.
I agree that the mets have choked the last 2 years towards the end of the season. But you have to figure they are due.......
And how will signing Martinez help against the Mets in September? The last 3 years he hasn't been able to pitch more than 130 innings a year (and only 50+ innings in 2007).
Just like the Astros have choked in the first half of the season for the better part of a decade...their due to come out of the gate a little bit faster. In any case they already took a flier on a broken down, once great, pitcher. They don't need two. Or better yet, have Backe and Pedro share starts. Backe can give the team about 3 innings before he implodes and Pedro is only good for 5. Put 'em together you might have a decent starter.
maybe he could give us a better cushion ?? for September? These are just thoughts, I don't see what Pedro could hurt?
Based on last year's numbers, Moehler and Rodriguez would be ahead of Martinez in the Astros' pecking order. Do you really think they should spend 5 million on a pitcher who has a 3 year history of being injured for a significant portion of the season? If they could get him for next to nothing, it wouldn't hurt to take a look at him, but $5 million is a bit steep.
five million is just what i heard on ESPN. I'm sure we might try and throw a couple million at him and see what he might say. Probably a long shot, but who knows. Honestly though, I'd say he is on the same level as every other pitcher on the Astros, excluding Roy and Val ..... but your right 5 million would be to much, and to risky... I just hope Hampton can have a hell of a year. who knows
At this point, I'll take any pitcher with a decent track record. It can't be any worse than what the stros have now
The scary part is a washed up over the hill Pedro is proably better than anything in the starting rotation minus Oswalt. No way the Astros add another 5mil to payroll. Only f.a. that has a chance of getting added to the team is Ivan Rodriguez I.M.O.
