Martinez: Things will change or there will be no Pedro

    Associated Press

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic -- Pedro Martinez said he'll stay with the Boston Red Sox only if the team makes some changes.

"I don't want gossip or last season's bickering. There will be some changes in Boston or there will be no Pedro Martinez," the star pitcher said last week.

Martinez, who has been staying in his native Dominican Republic, refused to say what "bickering" he was referring to, but the team was beset with injuries and complaints from unhappy players all season. The Red Sox missed the playoffs last year despite a $110 million opening-day payroll.

Martinez couldn't be reached for comment Monday because he had flown to Fort Myers, Fla., where team doctors would do a routine check-up on his injured shoulder, said his assistant, Elvira Trinidad.

Martinez, who signed a $77.5 million, six-year contract in 1997, still has two more years in his contract, but he has suggested that it should be renegotiated. He had clashed with coaches and managers in

September about whether he was healthy enough to pitch after several months on the disabled list.

"I want to win and everyone knows that. We have a team with enough quality to triumph, but injuries and other things I hope will disappear affected us," Martinez said.

If Martinez were to actually leave the Red Sox, there would be no way he would even consider being traded to Houston with Jimy Williams now entrenched as the manager. Martinez hated the way Williams always gave him the early hook in the 6th-7th innings when it was obvious Pedro wasn't ready to come out. The Red Sox and Astros seem to have an affinity on trading with each other so let's hope this opportunity doesn't present itself or Williams will already have strikes against him before the season even begins.

No way in hell does the penny-pinching Drayton open his wallet for Pedro.

Are you crazy? If Drayton had the chance to bring Pedro to Houston with 2 years left on his current contract he would do it in a heartbeat. Arizona just proved that pitching wins championships. Could you imagine a 1-2-3 starting staff of Pedro, Oswalt, and Miller? Reynolds and Hernandez to round out the staff! Too bad it would never happen because Jimy Williams is in town.

I don't know if Drayton would take a chance on another pitcher named Pedro with a bum shoulder. That didn't work out so well for us this year.

Come on over to the Yankees Pedro, you know you want to.
    Pedro
    Mussina
    AP
    The Rocket
    El Duque

Just tack on Juan Gonzales for ONeill and Giambi as the DH in place of Knoblauch and well give people something to complain about. Can you say 150 wins?
