In my opinion I thought the movie was really well done. It was a mixture of Titanic and Saving Private Ryan. Good acting jobs by the cast. The one thing bad was the war was kind of too long, but overall I think it was done well. The reviews were bad but doesnt matter because they rate the sorry movies high.

Who saw it ? What did u think of it ?

If it is a mix of Saving Private Ryan and Titanic, I know I won't like it. I thought Saving Private Ryan was a beautiful movie and I love Hanks, but I HATE these huge blockbuster movies.

    Jeff,

Why do you hate huge blockbuster hits?

I heard it cost more to make this movie than the actual damage the japanes caused at Pearl Harbor.

... and with a sprinkle of Armageddon, no? [IMG] I haven't seen it yet, and probably won't until some of the hoopla dies down. However, I might just watch to see what all the hype is about. I first saw its preview very early in the year, and was fascinated by its premise. Is it true that they make the Japanese look like good guys?

    Azim,

No, it doesn't. If anything, it made me somewhat angry at the Japanese for the cold, calculating way they planned & carried out the attack. They really kicked our butts that day. I thought that the movie was excellent. I can also see why the Japanese have voiced concerns about the potential for violence directed at them as a result. I pray that, that does not happen. The movie is a remake of "Tora Tora Tora", but with a lot more great special effects & it goes into greater detail of all the different actions(for instance, what happened to the two planes that got off the ground in "Tora Tora Tora"). It also starts well before the attack & goes on after the attack. What happened after the attack, I never knew happened. You'll have to go see the movie to find out what it is. [IMG] It is however, 2 1/2 to 3 hours long, but I really didn't notice it. Go see it. I highly recommend it.

For some of you younger ppl out there. If you really want to know about the history of Pearl Harbor and why USA entered the war then watch this movie. Just ignore the love parts of the movie. [IMG]

I just saw several interviews on the news with Pearl Harbor veterans who saw the movie. Overall, almost all of them liked it and thought it was well done. They felt the war scenes were pretty realistic.

As for myself, no way I'm going to see this movie. I think it is a definite renter. Plus, anything with Ben Affleck(sp?) is on the bottom of my list. Except for watching the war scenes, I have no interest in seeing a weakly done triangle romance.

Not all, just the overdramatized hype. I hated Titanic, but I really liked Saving Private Ryan. I think that for me I want historical films to be as honest as they are exciting. IMO, the idea of good looking Americans fighting the good fight seems so contrived and cheesy.

Private Ryan was the opposite of that. It was dirty, bloody and honest like a real war. Yes, it had some cheesy, preachy moments, but it was true to the way war really is.

I find it hard to imagine a war with no blood and guts and that is what Pearl Harbor seems to be. Not that I like blood and guts because I don't, but it really isn't realistic.

Plus, let's face it, this film came from the director/producer team of Armaggedon, The Rock and Bad Boys which all looked more like commercials than movies. That's not too surprising considering that is director's background.

Honestly, I like big budget movies, but I am always skeptical of historical renderings done in big budget film. In order to draw in people and hit every conceivable demographic, the filmmakers invariably omit sensitive or uncomfortable elements and that tends to trivialize the situation.

    But, that's just me. [IMG]

Me too. I'm not the kind of guy who HAS to see it first. I'll prolly see it in a couple of weeks or so. The media makes it seem like you're a loser if you weren't the first one to see Batman or Phantom Menace.

The romance was awful. I didn't believe any of them loved each other... atleast Titanic pulled that part off. The girl just didn't impress me... I'm no Ben Affleck fan but he was better than I imagined he would be in the movie.

The battle scenes are pretty revolutionary... honestly one of the few times I've watched computer effects and felt it was completely realistic and believable. It's no wonder it cost over $100 million and over a year to make... I'll own it on DVD for that reason. The realism of the battle scene is what makes this a superb movie. I still can't believe the shots of the battle ships with planes constantly flying by and realistic explosions everywhere... even with computers I don't know how they pulled it off.

I won't give anything away, but a few scenes I could see why the Japanese would be upset with the film. There were also a few scenes where you could tell the producers took creative license on history and did so to appease the Japanese.

Also Jon Voight kicked ass as FDR and Dan Akroyd played a small serious role very well also.

It's a Bay/Bruckheimer production (The Rock, Armageddon, Bad Boys), so be prepared for many slow motion, high drama, intense color visuals with the intent to inspire you.

DOH! I see someone already brought that up. You're right Jeff... the funny thing is I like all those movies, but not for the realism/history aspect by any means. Pearl Harbor shouldn't have been done by those guys.... but they did a fairly decent job. Loose on history in some regard, which did piss me off, but true to many things. I think it's worth a viewing...

Speaking of which -- there's the big conspiracy theory, which many believe, that the US knew well in advance the Japanese were attacking Pearl Harbor, but FDR needed this to get the country rallied and in to the war.

Has anyone been to Pearl Harbor? I have.... very sobering.

Nothing will top Tora Tora Tora.

The Finest movie about the attack of Pearl Harbor ever made. Bar none. No computers used, just good old fashioned acting.

Whatever happened to movies with just acting without the computerized special effects crap?

    They're called independent films...

    ------------------
"Empire" had the better ending. I mean, Luke gets his hand cut off, finds out Vader's his father, Han gets frozen and taken away by Boba Fett. It ends on such a down note. I mean, that's what life is, a series of down endings. All "Jedi" had was a bunch of Muppets.

    Jeff,

There are blood and guts. This movie was worth it for the battle scene alone...it seemed to last for an hour and a half.

I think what we see today is over-acting. I don't know why so many people like the over-dramatical shows, specifically Seinfield and Friends.

I love the special effects and explosions of modern technolegy, but the acting has gone downhill.

I can watch something like The Longest Day or Tora! Tora! Tora! a couple times in a row and still enjoy it. But most of the latest movies I do not care to see again, like Armaggedon and The Rock. I think one of the few exceptions is The Matrix.

So, did the movie take the vein that Roosevelt did/did not know?

For movie purposes, I suppose it would be better if he didn't know, BUTif you want to stay historical, the evidence somewhat suggests that he did (although nothing conclusive).
