    Payton still slows Lakers

TRADE AMENDED: He won't report to Boston, so LA gets Jones instead of Banks and a draft pick.

12:20 AM PDT on Saturday, August 14, 2004

By BRODERICK TURNER / The Press-Enterprise

Still irate over being traded from the Lakers to the Celtics, Gary Payton failed to report to Boston on Friday to take his physical, forcing the teams to amend their trade.

The Lakers will get 6-foot-8 forward Jumaine Jones instead of second-year guard Marcus Banks and a second-round pick in next year's draft. The Lakers had acquired Banks and the pick earlier in the month, along with guard Chucky Atkins and 7-footer Chris Mihm, for Payton, Rick Fox and a first-round pick.

Payton, 36, remains the property of Boston. In a phone interview Friday, Payton said he would retire before reporting to Boston.

"I wasn't going to Boston to take a physical," he said. "I ain't going to move my family no more. I can't take my family to Boston. It ain't no disrespect to Boston."

Payton said he'd prefer to play for Houston, Minnesota or the Clippers.

Payton is due to earn $5.4 million in the last year of his contract. If he doesn't report and isn't traded again, Payton would not get paid.

"I don't care about that," Payton said. "If it goes down, I'll quit. I can go on and do something else."

Payton said had he known the Lakers were going to trade him, he wouldn't have exercised his contract option for next season.

"They used me to sign so they could get other players," Payton said. "Boston is going to lose out on this. They ain't going to get (nothing). It's about respect. They (the Lakers) didn't respect me. Why should I respect them?"

The Celtics said they expected Payton to be in Boston on Monday to take a physical.

With Jones, the Lakers have five small forwards again.

Jones, 25, has averaged 6.9 points and 3.9 rebounds while playing for three teams in five seasons. He shot a career-low 34.4 percent from the field last season, his first in Boston. Limited to 8.9 minutes a game, Jones averaged 2.2 points and 1.6 rebounds.

Sorry just a short quote only.

Damn, why couldnt he say it last week. I am still very mad that rockets signed Ward for 3 years.

there's way too many diva's in the league right now. It will eventually ruin the system but it's fun watching all the offseason movement

I'd trade Spoon for Payton. The salaries would work, cap wise.

The only way i'd have any interest in Payton is if it was a straight up deal for Ward. Even then, I still hesitate because of his attitude and how it could effect team chemistry.

The curious thing about this- it happens to fit very neatly with our $5.48 million trade exception. I don't mean to fuel anything, but because our exception covers Payton, it makes the mechanics of any potential deal very workable in terms of salary matching, as well as being able to add other players from Boston's side even though we're within 60 days).

Even more curious when the Rockets allegedly seemed to be trying to acquire Mutumbo purely through APE (115%+100K), so as to preserve the trade exception.

Ward (and Sura) can not be traded until December 15.

But by trading Payton, the Celtics will need a PG in return- Banks isn't ready yet, and they lost Atkins in the deal.

If you could get Payton for Tyronn Lue, perhaps straight up (with the Celtics dropping a cancer, and filling a need position with a small, expiring contract, and cutting salary out of it), or perhaps with a pick thrown in, would you do it?

Maybe we could get Kenneth Perkins, the youngster from Beaumont, along with the grumpy old man from the Celts?

We're not going to trade Charlie Ward to another team immediately after signing him. You get a bad reputation in the league when you treat players that way. Isn't that why Payton is so angry?

No, he demanded the LAL to trade him because he did not like the Shaq move. He's angry now because he's being traded to a crap team. hahahaha. You know, he took a salary cut to get some ring. But now, he'll be lacky if he can make the playoff with the Celtics.

Oh, we don't need him to destroy the locker room chemistry by acting like a veteran who's gonna bring the young kids some rings.

I'd LOVE to get Payton. No offense to Charlie Ward or anything, but if we're going to have an older point, let it be someone that still has a shred of talent. I think Payton has at least 2 more good years left in him, and I consider last season an aberration and product of a ****ed up project proving you can't have four stars together, especially if one of them is Karl Malone.

Gary Payton's stats from the last two seasons :

    02 - 03 : MPG - 40 , PPG - 20.4 , APG - 8.3 , RPG - 4.20

    03 - 04 : MPG - 34.5 , PPG - 14.6 , APG - 5.6 , RPG - 4.20

Look at this nine man rotation :

    Yao Ming
    Juwan Howard
    Jim Jackson
    Tracy Mcgrady
    Gary Payton
    Mo Taylor
    Bobby Sura
    Dikembe Mutombo (???)
    Tyronn Lue

That team can get you deep into the playoffs, IF healthy. That is probably the only real worry I would have.

I hate to say but Gary Payton by far is a lot better player than Charlie Ward. If the glove wants to come in. I would sign him, in a heart beat!

For those that want Payton on the Rockets I bet you could offer Boston Lue + part of the T.E. and they might be interested. Both have one year left on their deal. Payton could be the starter with Ward as the backup.

    get payton!!!!

since gary does not want to play for Boston, we should offer Ty Lue/Gaines for him. At least Boston gets something for nothing. GP would offer this team veteran leadership, a point guard who doesn't turn the ball over and a tenacious competitor. I know that he is passed his prime, but a healthy GP is a lot more than what we have now. Also, could GP lure Karl Malone to the Rockets? I think if we could get Malone somehow as well, play him about 20 -25 min a night, he and GP would make the Rockets instant title contenders. Think about it, a healthy Karl Malone would have helped the Lakers a Lot. This would be our starting 5.

    GP/CWard/Gaines
    TMac/Sura
    JJ/Boki
    Malone/Mo Taylor
    Yao/J Howard/Malone

I'd love to see Gary on this team this year, and maybe the next 2. I agree that he's lost his athleticism. But, he's very BB smart, tough, an excellent passer. He'd just have to be bought in to getting it to TMac and Yao. I think he would, after what has happened, since this has to have humbled him. Actually, if Lue knows he won't start, he might want to get traded to Boston, since he'd probably start there. But, if he didn't want to go, you'd hate to do the exact same thing to him.

I don't blame Payton for being angry. He took a major pay cut to play on a championship team. That was a pretty ugly move by LAL. Imagine if we had traded Barkley to a lottery rebuilding team, after he signed on for a year at the minimum, so we could get Pip. He would have retired too.

I'd love to see us get Mutumbo from CHI. I still would like to get Duhon thrown in somehow, and I would still like it if we traded Howard for Chandler. Since he can play 4 positions, it would give us so much more depth, and stronger building toward the future. It doesn't look like it will happen, but I wish we'd sign E.Griffin, too. It would be a great mix of veterans, young stars, and upcoming talent at every position with Chandler,Boki, Gaines, Duhon and Griffin. I'd be thrilled if our team ended up:

    Yao/Deke/Chandler
    Taylor/Spoon/E.Griffin
    JJ/Boki/(Chandler)
    TMac/Sura/Gaines
    Payton/Ward/Duhon

With that team, I think we'd end up #4 or 5 seed in the West. But, by that time, hopefully our team would have jelled and JVG would have developed our defense, so its EVEN possible we could end up taking it all in the playoffs.

We probably won't end up with Chandler, Duhon, or EGriffin, unfortunately. But, IMHO, adding Payton to the mix would improve our chances this year.
