    Well, the E-machines saga continues....

    Purchased computer in March 2000
After 2 months started experiencing power problems - computer would shut down spontaneously, would keep trying to restart, wouldn't shut down at all etc etc...

After about a month of putting up with this, I call Emachines and they advise that they will send out a replacement power supply. Replacement takes 3 months to arrive, by which time computer is virtually unusable. I went nuts trying to deal with them on the phone.

Power supply arrives, but before I could install it, the computer crashes. Fixed it once, crashed again.

After stripping all my own components from the computer (CDRW, TV Capture card, Firewire card) and rescuing data off harddrive I send machine back to Emachines at my own expense.

According to my UPS report, it was delivered and signed for at Emachines on 22 December.

I call Emachines yesterday to find out it if my replacement is shipped. They have no record of the computer arriving. I ask the guy in 5 different ways if they can call or contact the warehouse and find out whether my machine has arrived, and when my replacement will ship. He advises that there is no way on this green earth that he can find out. I ask him if Emachines is actually a computer company, and if so, do they have a computer controlled inventory/control system. He says yes, but they cannot possibly go about finding my computer. He then advises that they will wait until 20 business days have passed before sending me a replacement. I ask why. He said that if they sent one out now, there is a risk that they would duplicate the order and send me two, and that "would cause all sorts of problems". So I say, "Well, I 'd hate to cause you guys any inconvenience". I also offered that if they sends out two machines by mistake, I would return one at my one cost. No dice. Wait 20 business days.

Tough luck there, davo. I don't have any comparable story to sympathize with you. Sorry.

How about this: You build a giant wooden rabbit and do a surprise attack on them.

Well that's bad (the fact that they can't find your computer).

I have two eMachines computers, both of which have lost power supplies. But considering that a person can buy a new power supply on eBay for $20-$30 (or at a locally-owned electronics store in Houston I know of for about $40, or at Fry's for $45), I wouldn't ever even bother trying to get a warranty replacement for that. It's far easier to just buy a new power supply and install it yourself.

But since that's not your computer problem anymore, I guess that's neither here nor there.

I don't know what your other problem was, but it's really the customer service that makes this a bad experience. Every computer company makes a lemon now and again (eMachines more than others, especially in terms of their power supplies, apparently). It's how the company handles those problems that makes the difference.

I guess the only thing to do now is to keep calling the company. When you reach a deadend with one person, ask to speak to their supervisor and keep doing that until you actually wear them down enough to solve your problem. It'll be a pain, but I suspect if you argue with enough people, they'll eventually get your problem solved. You might even get lucky and end up having the replacement computer be a better machine than the computer you sent in (that happened to me once, but with a different company).

The incompetence of some businesses simply amazes me.

Man, that is just absolutely horrible. Which one is it that you bought?

I say we start an email campaign on your behalf. Just flood the damn company with emails until they give in. [IMG]

Anyway, emachines has to be one of the crappiest companies, IMHO. People never seem to be happy with them, and always wish they had spent the extra money to get a respectable and reliable machine. They are also rated as the one "Poor" company in the PC World scores (of course excluding those that are currently in financial troubles and have filed bankrupcy).

Good idea, Ace, but it sounds to me like the company would either lose the emails or never receive them. [IMG]
