Get those machines clean before installing XP SP 2!! Anyone here installed this yet? How's your computer working since you installed it? Any problems? ------------------------------------------------------ Spyware interferes with Microsoft patch SEATTLE, Washington (AP) -- Though Microsoft Corp.'s new security update package is all about protecting systems from worms, viruses and spyware, it can't do much about what's already on computers -- and that could pose a problem. The company is warning users of the Windows XP operating system to check for spyware before downloading the free massive security update, called Service Pack 2. Barry Goff, a group product manager at Microsoft, said some spyware could cause computers to freeze up upon installation of the update. Spyware, which typically piggybacks with downloaded software such as file-sharing programs, tracks behavior, triggers pop-up ads and can otherwise cause problems on computers. Programs such as Ad-Aware and SpySweeper can scour computers for spyware. Microsoft recommends that users clean their PCs of spyware and back up their data before turning on the auto update feature that automatically downloads Service Pack 2, or SP2. People who download SP2 also may need to check whether legitimate programs, such as third-party security software, need to be updated. SP2 makes major changes, including adding a Windows Firewall to better guard computers against attack, and those changes can also cause compatibility issues with other software. Microsoft finished work on SP2 in early August and is slowly distributing it to customers through automatic downloads, manual downloads and CDs. The company is metering out the product to avoid clogging up networks and slowing other Internet traffic -- and to monitor for any glitches. Goff said fewer than 10 million consumers have received SP2, while several million businesses have downloaded the product. Research firm IDC estimates that about 260 have been sold. --------------------------------------
Same here. At work, no problemas, and at the casa, won't do it because it says it is ~75 MB, and have a dial up conección. No se puede... muy despacio.
You can always request a free CD. That's how I got my copy. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx
What do you love about it? I've heard plenty of people saying it's a good patch, but also people quoting that article saying it's a loophole for many spyware programs to piggyback on, so I was just wondering what the added features were?
Problem or two. I've had a program freeze up on me a couple of times since I got the patch. Of course, it might not be related. I'll run my ad-aware tonight.
Sometimes, when I click on a link, I have to refresh it to connect. That, and some of my Net connections seem a bit slow, although they are screamin' today. That could be a coincidence.
It adds on to a lot of Windows based stuff. For instance, it gives you the option for your own firewall -- or you can choose to disable the windows FW and choose to use your own. It also added a pop-up blocker in IE. I'm sure there's a list of stuff it added onto, i'm just not that big on computers enough to find them all out
I am using it at home with no problems(but with FireFox, Adaware, and SpyBot, I have never had problems). It also adds a security monitor that monitors your firewall, connections and even monitors yoru viru ssoftware if you allow it. I am also the main tester at work. I have it on 2 of my 3 machines but the third machine has had issues when I install it. It won't load past the XP logo startup screen. After staying on that screen for about 10 seconds it restarts. I re-loaded windows and ran updates up to SP2 and have no problems.
The firewall is enabled by default, IE browser comes with popup stopper and stop nagging you to install sh!tty spyware activex controls. This is a life saver for non IT savvy folks who sometime click yes to install spyware activex controls by accident.
Microsoft said it would take four to six weeks for it to ship. Mine got here in about a week. I bet everyone is going to keep their hands on their copy of SP2. I know I don't want to have to find another copy the next time a wipe my hard drive clean. Even though I downloaded SP2, I also ordered the CD. I want a copy of it on disk.
