I have a 64 bit processor and my friend gave me Windows XP x64. I want to upgrade it but I read some reviews and it looks like it could be a bad idea. I would like to get Vista but not for another year when all the bugs are fixed. What are the benefits of upgrading to a 64-bit OS? Should I even bother? By the way my processor is an AMD 64 Athlon 4600x2
IMO, it's not worth it to upgrade to a 64-bit OS at this time. For one thing, driver support is scarce at best....and there aren't many apps out there that can even take advantage of a 64-bit platform.
Nope You barely get any preformance boost, not to mention the hassle of finding programs and drivers that support it.
it depends on what you are doing with that machine. for what I do xp64 would be a boost do to the improved handling of memory. If you don't use extensive amounts of ram then this probably won't help you. second it will depend on what hardware you use in conjunction with your computer and whether there are 64bit drivers available (that work). Third, it depends on the applications you are running whether you will benefit or not. I'm with you on Vista. I won't touch it for a year or so. I like XP64 and it is a stable operating system. If you don't use more than 2gigs of ram at a time it would probably be in your best interest to hang tight with XP for a bit.
Thanks for you help guys, based on your responses I have decided not to install it. I guess I will wait.
