If you had to choose between these two?

    # Pentium 4 521 (2.8 GHz / 800 MHz FSB); 256KB L2 cache with Hyper-Threading technology

    # Pentium 4 524 (3.06 GHz / 533 MHz FSB); 256KB L2 cache with Hyper-Threading technology

First one has a higher FSB, the 2nd one has a higher frequency.

    Your opinions would be appreciated.

I think the 2.8 is better.

Agreed, that bus speed will really show its teeth, but most games are graphics card dependent.

I'd get the 3.0 and overclock it.... At stock speeds, get the one that's cheapest because they'll be all but identical.

almost all games are limited by your graphics card, not your CPU.

you need to do some research on your options on graphics cards, or you'll be disappointed.

Are you building your own computer?

My BIOS doesn't have a function to change the FSB.

Not building, just upgrading so I am limited on what processors I can choose, and those are the two.

I have already ordered a 256mb graphics card and just upgraded my ram from 512mb to 1.5gb.

The game I am running, Flight Simulator X, is heavily graphics dependent.

agreed on the 800FSB bus, that should make more of a difference than the 300MHz.

At a higher FSB, you'll see all your peripherials clocked higher I believe (I forget the divider), so that should help too.

    I have that game also.

It is memory heavy and you will probably want more than 256mb. I have a 7950GT vid card with 512GB and I can barely get past the basic settings with 3GB RAM and a AMD X2 6000+ dual core.

If you want to make the game look good forget about your motherbaord and pay the extra 50 to upgrade that. Then get a good dual core or quad core.

Codell, I have that game too. It's VERY resource intensive.

    I'm running it with 2 8800GTS's (640MB) in SLI.

I was running it with one card, and just couldn't get the FPS I wanted with the higher end settings.

I don't think it'll look very good / run well with only 256mb card. (at basic settings)

GL. But I think you should scrap that mobo, and save the money on the cpu upgrade. It's pretty pointless to upgrade the cpu and not the other components.

    http://www.newegg.com

I have an extra 8800gts if anyone wants it. (fee ofcourse, but cheap). I had another system in my house but have no use for it now.

Basically you can run it but to get decent gameplay everything will be turned off. You won't "see" any scenery or anything. Your airplane will be a stick model looking thing.

You need to turn you head sometimes to see the landing strip or the flour target and when graphics are turned on it has to have them all in RAM.

I'd lean towards the higher FSB. Think of it as car traffic. Which will move more information, a two lane freeway with cars going at 70mph, or a 4 lane with cars moving at 60mph?

haha alienwares are awesome but you can easily build the same computer yourself for like $2000

Which graphics card did you order? Ram in a graphics card isn't much of a performance indicator. Also, if you go with the 800mhz fsb chip, your old ram may not work. You're asking it to go from 133 to 200mhz (quad pumped data rate)
Are you sure your motherboard will support such a bus speed? And if it will, will it support any of the newer Intel cores? For example, if your board will support the E7200, it's THREE+ times faster than those Prescott 521-524's. Sometimes there are BIOS flashes available to get newer cores to work if they are bus speed compatible. It's such a huge difference I'd at least look into it.

ok i upgraded my board, but am still on a budget for a new CPU

which one is better for gaming (specifically FSX)?

    Intel Pentium D 945 3.4GHz 800MHz 4MB S775 (4mb cache)

    Pentium Dual-core E2220 2.40GHz 800 MHz Processor (1mb cache)

    ntel Core 2 Duo E4600 2.4Ghz 800Mhz CPU SLA94 (2mb cache)

all three are about the same price new

I'd get this one if I had to pick from that selection, codell, but I'm no expert. :)

    wrong.

    Intel Core 2 Duo E4600 2.4Ghz 800Mhz CPU SLA94 (2mb cache)

that is the best processor in that lot, easily.

This one is faster if your budget stretches to $120 and your board supports it.

The E4600 is the fastest chip listed.
