Anyone ever had their PayPal account hacked? Someone made 10 $200 charges to a website named tagged.com. Apparently this is a social networking site where you can spend real money to buy junk. PayPal suspended the account once it hit 10 transactions and AMEX noted the fraudulent activity. I called AMEX and they took care of the charges and are sending me a new card. I filed a dispute with PayPal (as well as changing my login info) and left a message for the folks at tagged.com, because it seems like it should be a relatively simple thing to find the IP and/or user ID of the person who made the charges. Obviously they may have a fake name, address, etc, but hopefully PayPal and tagged.com will cooperate. I never reply to phishing emails and rarely use my PayPal account (maybe twice a year) so I am a bit concerned as to how they got my account info.
I am proud to say that no one I know would ever use real money to buy fake stuff on some Internet social site.
Wow, sorry bobrek. How is paypal dealing with it? Are they responsive? From a selfish angle, this is not making me want to re-up with them, and I'm like the only person in America without a paypal account.
I discovered this around 11:30 PM so there was no one to physically call. I filled out their fraud stuff and received the canned email replies. So far (and I don't expect things to be different), everything has gone well. PayPal suspended my account after the 10 $200 transactions. Fortunately I have my PayPal account tied to an AMEX card and AMEX immediately recognized it as potential fraud so the charges were not placed against my account. Had it been cash or my bank account, things would probably be a bit more difficult. It is just disconcerting to me how this happened. I am savvy enough to recognize phishing scam and other nefarious activity. It wasn't an "inside" job. For my peace of mind, I hope Paypal and tagged.com get together and try to track down how this happened. In the meantime I will be canceling my PayPal account as soon as I can speak to someone and get the restriction lifted. I have no complaints as to how this was handled by AMEX and PayPal.
I had my account hacked by some guy in china trying to use ebay and paypal to buy a laptop. It was frustrating 4 hours but I got everything squared away. It took days to get my hotmail account back. Now everything has it's own password. My password was 8 random letters and numbers with no words or anything it is. It was very strong. Learn from my mistakes Clutchfans.
Not sure they hacked your password by clever guesses. Some security expert correct me, but it isn't like "Wargames" these days. They can either get into the short hairs (your password, no matter how random) or they can't. Probably my biggest liability is only using 2-3 passwords for most of my online life. I know that's going to sting me one of these days.
Download firefox, and use the no-script add-on. I guarantee you got malware/trojan of some sort from a bad ad somewhere. Safe browsing!
I just had a conversation with a friend about paypal. Friend: Do you have paypal. Me: No, I don't trust electronic money. Friend: Aren't you a computer programmer? Me: Yes, thats why I don't trust electronic money.
Just found out that my Paypal got hacked. I called them and they told me that as of earlier this year, hackers have the ability to get your user/pass from free email accounts. They then were able to log into my Paypal, since one of my free accounts used the same password. Luckily, Paypal has metrics which detect these sort of shenanigans- the hacker changed my language preference to Chinese and Paypal put a limitation on my account. Moral of the story- use different passwords everywhere.
Mine was hacked several years ago. Louisiana had an option to pay your state income taxes with PayPal, and I did. A couple of months later, I got an $1800 hit on my account that said it was from the Louisiana Department of Revenue, but had a co.uk email address. I contested it and PayPal made it right within a week, but I disconnected my account from my bank account and have never used it since. PayPal has good conflict resolution, but their security sucks.
Mine was hacked several years ago as well. Nothing major like this but a $79.00 charge was placed on my account. It took a while, I want to say like 3 months but eventually everything was taken care of.
