I once had a client who was a "Republic of Texas" member (whatever that means) and he told me he hadn't paid Income Taxes for years. He also drove around with out plates (or inspection) on his vehicle. Haven't seen or talked to him for years so he may be sitting in a jail cell for all I know.

i have a friend who is city attorney in a small town in east texas...they had a guy arrested for public intoxication or something like that...he claimed he was a Republic of Texas member. he told the judge, while on the stand, that the judge didn't have any authority over him since Texas was never really a state and the judge was merely a state court judge.

yeah, he was locked up for contempt of court and then some! :)

Ya there is NO WAY IN HELL I am gonna mess with the IRS, they just up and take yo' stuff!
    Just ask Willie!

I had a W2 that didn't get to me until after I filed one year. It wasn't for very much at all. I was like "I'm a punk teenager, what the hell are they gonna do?" Well, I got fined and had to pay them penalties for not filing a W2 that would have increased my refund!

What penalty did they assess against you? Generally late penalties only apply to failure to pay additional taxes. Since you had no additional tax you had to be, I am curious as to what the penalty was.

    Edit:

    Should have been:

Man you would have to be pretty damn stupid to follow this guy's advice.

Btw, wasn't the president of the Republic of Texas convicted 5-10 years ago for tax evasion, counterfeiting bills and checks, and numerous other crimes stemming from his refusal to recognize the annexation of Texas by the USA? I never did figure out why it would be ok for him to bounce checks even if Texas was its own nation.

I had to pay like a $250 penalty for filing an incomplete return or something like that. It was a long time ago, but I am careful as hell when I do my taxes now!

My wife's last job (before I married her and made her move away from big D) was as a senior trial attorney for the USDOJ, Tax Division. She has LOTS of interesting stories about these tax protesters. Electing to not pay taxes IS voluntary....just as driving 150 in a 55 mph speed zone. Of course, you probably don't want to get caught doing it.

She also has lots of good stories about some of the judges here in Texas. I don't think I'd want to be a female trial attorney working in Corpus Christi.

I don't know if any of you listen to Tom Martino's show (The Troubleshooter) on 740 in the afternoons, but not too long ago, he had this Schill guy, a senior IRS auditor and Richard Alderman (the people's lawyer) all on at the same discussing this matter. For the life of me, I can not remember what the outcome was.

Does anyone else listen to this show?
