I hope everone agrees that we don't dump Rudy just for the sake of change. We need to replace him with someone that will teach basics like how to throw a chest pass. We also need to replace him with someone that has been around long enough that the players will respect. I read in the Chronicle today that there's a high likelihood that Silas will leave the Hornets, particularly in light of the fact that he has called the owners crazy or an idiot. I hvae heard nothing but positive things about Paul Silas . . . i.e., he is the least known and most appreciated coach in the NBA. Questions: 1. I'd like to hear additional feedback regarding Silas' coaching credentials, ability and style. My sense is that if we replaced Rudy with Silas, Francis would be on board b/c his boy B. Davis would highly endorse Silas. Not tht making Francis is the reason to choose a coach, but it's an ancillary benefit. 2. Would you take Silas, Van Gundy or Rudy T. I've heard lots of folks wanting Van Gundy, but how does throwing Silas into the mix change things, if at all? Until I learn more about silas, I'm still pro Van Gundy.
I am open to accepting Rudy T. coached his last game as the Houston Rockets big cheese but not so that we can bring in a phony like those two coaches are. Rudy T. is my vote, but get well Mister Tomjanovich then get your coaching together!
I don't know who should coach for the Rockets next year, but Rudy T is not an option. Rudy T runs no plays and it is painful to watch the Rockets. I am not really sure how Van Gundy ran his offense, but he did have a nice team with Ewing a few years back.
Rudy. You don't dump a coach with as many winning seasons as Rudy because of ONE disappointing season. If you think about that for a second, it really does sound absurd. And I don't even consider this season to be disappointing.
Count my vote for RUDY!!! How many coaches work the sideline as hard as Rudy? How many coaches work themselves into total exhaustion like Rudy? The only fault I find with Rudy is his loyalty to the starters. I have no problem with loyalty, just that he lets it go too long before he makes a change. Rudy, Rudy, he's our man. He's the one to lead us to the promised land. The only 2 men that I'd consider replacing Rudy with are Calvin Murphy & Don Nelson, but only after Rudy chooses to leave.
You do know its the rockets Gm that needs ot be replaced ,not the coach. Moving rudy upstairs will solve nothing. Same ol bad contracts and bad draft picks. amare ROY,nuff said
Rudy T is far ahead of the others! He just needs to get his mind set on where he is taking the team and what players are needed to play Team Basketball! He needs to improve his Assistant Coaches with Experienced professional NBA Coaches and get rid of the training School! We cant have the Larry Smith Saga ever again, it was a disaster.
Calvin Murphy is my dream coach right now. He has enough respect from the Rocket's players that I doubt anyone would complain. I think he understands the team concept to the games, and that his primary focus would be getting Yao the ball. Plus, I think he is really willing to give some of the "scrubs" a chance; let them develop more smoothly and get a taste for the game. Who knows what Nachbar, Maddox, or even Tmo could have brought to the Rockets last year. My first choice is Rudy, but if he is too hurt to coach, then bring in the Murphster.
I'm all for Murph, although I'd like to see him as an asst first. That said, I do not want Rudy coaching this team next year. I like Rudy, and would like to see him in the front office. I want Van Gundy, John Lucas or Larry Brown calling the shots. It goes without saying that I don't even want Mr. Mean cleaning the towels.
Grading the East coaches By Charley Rosen Page 2 columnist With less than one week remaining in the 2002-03 NBA season, it's time to evaluate the jobs turned in by each of the league's coaches. Remember, a team's record isn't the only indicator of how well -- or how poorly -- a coach performed. Here's my report card for the coaches in the Eastern Conference. I'll grade the West on Friday. ... Paul Silas, New Orleans -- Grade: A- Don't believe all the hype surrounding Baron Davis and Jamal Mashburn -- these guys are a pair of seriously flawed players. The former is careless and erratic with the ball, while the latter is mistake-prone. The reality is that the Hornets are among the NBA's most overachieving squads. Credit Silas with convincing his team that defense and rebounding are the keys to success -- two aspects of the game at which Silas excelled during his long (16 seasons) and glorious (three championships) NBA career. Also credit Silas for always retaining his dignity and poise, and for never compromising his integrity -- not even when Pat Riley was spreading the rumor that Silas was a lazy assistant coach and unworthy of being a head coach. Besides his talent, thoroughness and honesty, Paul Silas is good people in a cut-throat business. ------------------------- My take - I'm not so sure. Silas is much like Rudy - a player's guy (former Lenny Wilkins guy) that preaches defense and doesn't have too much direct x/o - more of a "matchups" guy. He seems better (than RT) at getting players to move to the bench (like he did) or find other ways to contribute. Van Gundy's devotion to Patrick even when his team was clearly better running without him also bothers me. I'm not so sure he's the right guy, either. He did do well with that playoff run once he put PE out to pasture. Of course, he got frustrated with that bunch of unmotivated misfits and quit mid-season later. I'd rather move away from grind it defense guys, and on to a scheme plotter. I'd rather have the Larry Brown type - something completely different. Van Chancellor is also in that mold right here in our org - good as top x/o assistant or better.
Jimmy Cleamons is my choice. Has been an assistant with phil for all 9 rings with the exception of the 1\2 yr deal with dallas. Word is he's really tough and very demanding whom the players respect alot. He's a triangle/defense type of guy. I'm ready to give someone else a chance beside the boring Van Gundy.
He also failed miserably with a young Dallas team. My vote is for Rudy. If you want to do something new in regards to the coaching staff, bring in a "name" assistant coach. It seems that all of the top teams now have coaches and then assistants who used to be coaches. Peer pressure.
Rudy aside, as I think that, if healthy enough, he's here no questions...OP told me... In a perfect world, my dream coaches for the Rockets are: 1) Roy Williams 2) Larry Brown 3) Flip Saunders 4) Greg Popovich 5) Pat Riley of the guys mentioned, I'd say that Silas is, I think, the better long term coach, while JVG might fill more of our holes, although neither is really a good fit.
