Wow....one guy that definitely deserves to be on the unemployment line. Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/b...0-01-27_paul_shirley_haiti.html#ixzz0dpnAqNcx
Idiots that have nothing else to write about, at least they come out and tell you up front they're morons instead of leaving you to assume.
Him, Scoop Jackson, and Jemele Hill should all be lobotomized. There is no way regular people have the same thought processes as these morons.
I read it yesterday, but didn't want to mention it as his article doesn't deserve to be read or get more page views. To sum up, it's written with the perspective of someone with no consideration for what life is actually like in other parts of the world. Instead it assumes everyone in the world grew up in middle class, midwest suburban America.
I used to enjoy reading his blog or whatever it was but have not seen anything from him in a while. That was pretty harsh and I'm a little shocked he clicked "submit" on that one without re-thinking what he was saying and how much of an open wound the whole situation still is. I can see some of his points but he needed to wait a while to make then and he certainly needed to be a lot more sensitive in how he said them. Bad move, Paul.
What's strange is that he has played basketball pretty much all over Europe if I remember correctly. He should be much more aware of life outside the U.S. than most professional athletes.
He shouldn't have wrote that but the truth is he isn't far off in some of his statements. Haiti now ranks 149th of 182 countries in the United Nations Human Development Index (2006). A country were 80% of the people are poor and the government doesn't help. Haiti's richest 1% own nearly half the country's wealth.[81] Haiti has consistently ranked among the most corrupt countries in the world on the Corruption Perceptions Index.[82] Since the day of "Papa Doc" Duvalier, Haiti's government has been notorious for its corruption. It is estimated that President "Baby Doc" Duvalier, his wife Michelle, and three other people are believed to have taken $504 million from the Haitian public treasury between 1971 and 1986.[83] Similarly millions was stolen by Aristide.[84][85][86][87][88] During the Aristide era, drug trafficking emerged as a major industry. Beaudoin Ketant, a notorious international drug trafficker close partner of Aristide, confessed that Aristide "turned the country into a narco-country. It's a one-man show. You either pay (Aristide) or you die".[89] The BBC describes pyramid schemes, in which Haitians lost hundreds of millions in 2002, as the "only real economic initiative" of the Aristide years.[90] Foreign aid makes up approximately 30–40% of the national government's budget. The largest donor is the United States – followed by Canada, and the European Union also contributes aid.[91] From 1990 to 2003, Haiti received more than $4 billion in aid. The United States alone had provided Haiti with 1.5 billion in aid. Now we are donating money to Haiti who has a history of notoriously being corrupted. He shouldn't' have wrote the article but he has every right not to donate. Either way its shame what happen their and people shouldn't come up with negative remarks about the situation or the people who can't do anything about it.
Could one of you enlightened scholars tell me a single point of his that is incorrect? The level of "political correctness" in America is sickening. Haiti was an absolute mess of a country, and with all this attention and money being sent there the questions he asked are legitimate. He is in no way blaming the Haitian people for getting hit by an earthquake. He is just asking what is the next step. What happens when the media catches on to the next big story, will we just put them right back in the shanties they came from?
Just like Darfur.....it was a media worthy and it disappeared. Just another stop for business who need to make money or Celebrity's who need a boost for their image. (not all Celebrity's)
we should make mexico ,haiti, puerto rico the 53 states. that way there are no more illegals, they would be legal, construction here would boom for more housing, and let the millions that live in mexico, rico, haiti all come here for free and live on section 8 for a while in a free house in nice subdivisions that are newly built. give them about $500 a month in food stamps, another $1000 for welfare a month, and free rent . its already happening in many parts of houston, why not make it country wide and invite them all here? get them vaccinated first, maybe even free clunker car from cash for clunkers. they will still struggle but it wont be as bad as over there. now, do we have the money to build all of this? actually yes. instead of throwing billions to a corrupt gov in haiti, and giving billions to fund a drug cartel in mexico, build houses here using chinese drywall (which is already being done and cheap) and let them be usa citizens then lets rename the usa, the north american union, and lets tear down the border to canada and mexico dont like my idea? then i guess you hate illegals then
While all that is most probably true, there's such thing as tact and class. The way he chose to go about critiquing the situation was piss-poor at best, much the same way Jemele Hill classified rooting for the Celtics being similar to rooting for Hitler. Everyone knows what she MEANT, but you've gotta have more common sense. Also, who is Paul Shirley to come out and say things like this? He needs to have some perspective as to where he falls on the totem pole. Nobody is going to accept comments from him like this. If he wants to get his message across, he needs to find a better way to go about doing it.
Yeah maybe he was drunk when he posted that stuff....or maybe he has a split personality or something. Selective memory is a good thing, i guess...
