Pats release Haynesworth - should the Texans pursue?

Patriots defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth was waived Tuesday, his agent Chad Speck confirmed.

Teams will have 24 hours to claim Haynesworth off waivers, who would be owed roughly $750,000 of his $1.5 million base salary if claimed by Wednesday afternoon. He also has playing-time incentives that would be difficult for Haynesworth to earn at this juncture, a source said.

If he is not claimed Haynesworth would become a free agent.

Several teams could use a defensive tackle, however Haynesworth's ineffective play and aloof behavior that has rankled teammates and coaches at previous stops at Tennessee and Washington could hinder his employment. Haynesworth got into a shouting match with defensive line coach Pepper Johnson during Sunday's loss to the Giants, but a source with knowledge of the situation said Haynesworth, who had just three tackles this season, was told by the Patriots that his behavior did not factor into his release.

"He was told it just wasn't a good fit and they wanted to end it now," the source said.

Haynesworth was traded to New England before the 2011 season from Washington, where he clashed with coach Mike Shanahan a season after being signed to a $100 million free-agent contract by the previous coaching-management regime. Haynesworth spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Titans, where at times he was considered one of the most dominant defensive linemen in the NFL.

I hate to say it but Yes.. Only because we need the depth.. What happens if Cody goes down? Obviously we are not injury bug free and depth can truly extend our defense.

Doesn't matter if we have the most balanced team in the league with the "best" defense in the league, Texans should always try to get better. I wouldn't mind picking him up for depth.

Just a myth.

At the Texans’ Vision Dinner last week at Reliant Stadium, defensive coordinator Wade Phillips explained to suite holders why his nose tackles “don’t have to be the size of a vending machine.”

“There’s all kinds of players,” Phillips said. “I think I’ve had six Pro Bowl nose guards since I’ve coached in the league – all different sizes. Ted Washington at Buffalo was 400 pounds, I know. And Greg Kragen (in Denver), he was 250-260. And even Jay Ratliff, who was in the Pro Bowl with us at the Cowboys, is about 280. He’s not as big as the guys we have here, and everybody’s saying, ‘Wow, these guys can’t play it.’ It’s all the techniques involved and how you play the position.

“It seems simple, but if you’ve got a great big guy that can’t penetrate, like some of the guys I’ve had, then you let him play right in the middle of the (center). If you’ve got a guy that’s quick, you let him stunt. If you’ve got a guy that’s strong, you let him power one side or the other of the center. That’s just the way you coach football. We can take a guy that has good ability – and I think both the guys we have have real good ability – and get him to play well.”

The reason that topic came up, of course, is that the guys that the Texans have at nose tackle are widely viewed as being too small. Shaun Cody is listed at 6-4, 304, and Earl Mitchell is listed at 6-3, 291.

A year (and a half) ago I was interested...but he's proven every critic correct. He's a cancer, he doesn't give a crap about the team, and he's let himself become woefully fat and out of shape. He's an embarrassment out there.

Titans defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth doesn't think much of the Texans' Matt Schaub as a quarterback, but he's a Sage Rosenfels fan.

Schaub was knocked out of the first game against the Titans. He was knocked out again in Sunday's 28-20 Texans loss with a dislocated left shoulder.

"I think he's just scared of us," Haynesworth said after the game. "Maybe next year he won't play against us; he'll just sit that game out."

In three games against the Titans, Rosenfels has thrown eight touchdown passes — three last season, four in the first game this season and one Sunday.

"We were determined not to let (Rosenfels) get started and all that," Haynesworth said, "but he still made some good plays. It's just too bad he didn't get that $60 million."

Schaub signed a six-year deal worth $48 million, but only $7 million is guaranteed.
