With Asik being so offensively limited, we need some offense from our PF spot. So far PPat has shown little ability to post up or create his own shot. Is he working on this? Does he have the phys attributes that lend themselves to this? I think back to Landry's development. Dude didn't show much in post moves and then was 2nd in 4th quarter scoring! Any chance PPat will do the same this year?
He's not useless on offence, hopefully last year was just a sophomore slump. Having said that, his post game is atrocious.. He is not a post up player. I feel his number 1 priority should be rebounding, that means hitting the gym and working on his in-game psychology to hustle more. He already has decent range on his shot DMo can post up a little but i think we are going to see a lot of motion offence with a million pick and rolls a game
I haven't given up on Patterson yet but he needs to have a breakout season to reward my faith. For his Rockets career, it's now or never. If he doesn't seize the starting PF job and establish himself from the beginning, Morey should trade him, go to tank mode in December and let the PF rookies learn the hard way.
I hate the pick and pop play. If he's gonna run pick and pop, he's got to get to the point where he can shoot that J at 55% and he can also face up and pass and actually find guys for good shots ala Chris Webber. In my humble opinion, if you can't run the pick and pop play with Webber/Vlade efficiency, then you shouldn't be running it. Shooting the J at 40-45% out there is a recipe for being a JAP, just another player. Alternatively, if he could learn to post up ala Scola he could really be something special because his D is already there. He was working on the post-up game late in the season. Hopefully he's been playing with McHale all summer and getting all those fakes and up and under moves down pat (no pun). Patterson has the physical tools and size to be great. He's already well above average defensively. Great defensive footwork, great strength to hold his ground, and very good hops to bother shooters and challenge at the rim. He has the ability to continue to improve offensively. And he's a hard worker. Patterson's greatest weakness is he's Mr. Nice Guy. He's not mean enough. I question whether he has the personality makeup to dominate on court. He's got this "aw shucks man" thing going on and he should be way more assertive in order to develop into a dominator. This season will tell the story on his future.
Other than the "very good hops to bother shooters" comment, I agree with this post. Not sure you necessarily need to be "mean," but definitely aggressive/competitive. He may have good hops, but I haven't seen those hops translate to the court yet imho. His steals per game are very average too. I hope Ppat can make us forget about 2011/12, but he's going to have to outplay some tough competition if he wants to see the court.
I think Pat is a good player he just seemed out of his comfort zone last year and I think he lost his confidence. Everything seemed rushed and out of control on offense. He definitely didn't progress like I thought he would but I think he'll be better this year. I still think D-Mo will eventually take his spot because he can do a lot more on offense and we will need that(especially since Asik's offense is trash). But Pat is a solid player...
Man, I know he was hurt at the beginning of last season, but had Patterson showed the pontenal he was capable of, we would of gotten the trade along time ago imo.
We need to find a backup for Asik and start Motiejunas. Patterson is not enough of a yang to Asik's yin.
Patterson and Asik together will make for some excellent pick and roll defense. And as much as the pick and roll killed this team last year, it'll be exciting to see these two play together this season.
He has a good jump shot just outside the paint. Towards the end of last season he was posting up but didnt have any success. He is a hard worker and he will definitely get better.
Until he learns how to muscle up in the paint and bang down low, he won't be a starting caliber 4. I'm rooting for him, but he's got to make a big leap this year. Hoping he spent plenty of time in the weight room this offseason, and is working aggressively on his post game.
I guess I saw Landry come out of nowhere and have so much iso'g. I just was wondering if a kid like PPat could do the same thing? We kind of need him to.
Seeing as how Patterson's got, like, nine hungry power forwards behind him on the depth chart, he better figure out how to contribute consistently in a hurry if he wants to play.
Hopefully Patterson plays well. Because he was horrible last year. He didnt rebound well or play defense. Hopefully he can play to his potential, I do like his jump shooting ability tho.
He was largely awful last year, I can remember only one stand out game. The rest of the time he looked like his head was elsewhere. He better recover his rookie year shine and quick.
Jones will be DMO's backup by mid-season. PPat may be the starter for now. Third stringer by the all-star break. PPat should borrow Jones' motor for the weekend and see how it is to go all out all the time.
