Partner, you cannot renounce Mobley and then give him a Bird Contract

This may be of interest to all, but I post this specifically in response to Heypartner's proposed strategy of having Mobley sign a one-year deal, renounce him next off-season (so he doesn't count toward the cap), sign Webber (or some other stud), and then sign Mobley to the money he deserves with a Bird Contract. Heypartner suggested a similar strategy could be used on Anderson.

It is a great idea, except that it won't work. The NBA cut you off at the pass, partner. While the Rockets would maintain his Bird Rights, they would be disallowed from giving him a Bird contract until the following season. Following is the CBA FAQ section:

As detailed in question number 25, free agents continue to count against their team's salary cap. By renouncing a player, a team gives up its right until the following June 30 to use the Larry Bird, Early Bird, or Non-Bird salary cap exceptions to re-sign that player. A renounced player no longer counts against the team's salary cap, so teams use renouncement to gain additional cap room. After renouncing a player, the team is still permitted to re-sign that player (the previous CBA prevented teams from re-signing a renounced player until 55 days into
the regular season), but they must either have enough cap room to fit the salary, or sign the player without using one of the three "Bird" exceptions.

Given this, perhaps the best thing Mobley can do for the team (besides playing for the minimum) is to sign a two-year Early-Bird so he'll only count $4.5 million against the cap when Dream retires.

Here's the deal...I've been saying all season long that you could renounce Mobley and TMass down to $0 and trade Walt and Cato for soon-to-be free agents then renounce them, too, thus cutting $12m or so off the cap. This is not possible anymore now that the trade deadline has passed.

But, it could have been done.

My mistake was saying we could do that next year. Which I knew was wrong, but it slipped out anyways. Juan, thx for being a watchful editor.

Here's the deal. You can renounce anyone and sign them back as free agents. But their ability to use a Bird exception is suspended for 1 year. That's why it works this year, but not next with Mobley.

I still say, watch for Mobley to not be restricted, and possibly even renounced this year down to $0. Then resigned like SA with a one year middle class.

That is part of what I suspect is the "Whoa" that Clutch is talking about on the front page.
